State of Play. Whoa dude.

If you can sit for conspiracy thrillers, this one is taut and intelligent.  Rent it.  It's very well written and with a good cast.  The likes of Crowe, Mirren, Penn (Robin, not Sean) and Affleck and some unfamiliar faces are all fine.  The thing about this type of movie for me is the better they are, the more I tense up watching them, which is why I normally avoid them.  This one had me pretty nervous.  You watch this and the phone rings, bet you mute it.  The phone, not the movie.  Right when you need it there is some relief with the entrance of the hilarious PR guy but not for long.  I got the tip about this flick from critics.  It did terribly at theaters and went to DVD quick but that is not the fault of movie, the marketing or lack of, maybe.  Tense, well constructed trip.

I agree that this is a very entertaining movie.  In fact, I went to see it at the theater twice with different friends.  I can't imagine anyone but Russell Crowe playing the part he did....Brad Pitt and then Edward Norton were originally scheduled.

I've been trying to watch it for the last two weeks.
I'll try again tonight when I get home. I keep losing interest before the movie gets started.

Interesting plot but could have been better.
However, I do agree with Russell Crowe playing his part right. I have a soft spot for Rachel McAdams and me think that she did just as well. Ben...... enough said. I would rather see Joaquin Phoenix and changed the title to "Gladiator II".
Definitely worth renting out. Weak **** on my scale.

I was pretty amazed with the plot, actually, maybe I'm a neophyte of the genre.  I think Affleck may have been between parts.  Thought he would be heavier in this ala Hollywoodland.  He's up in a new flick by the dude who did Office Space (ready for that?), maybe that's why.  Regardless, don't see how his portrayal could get much criticism.  Ok, he coulda been better.  Think he will be, too.

Do not have much to add about Affleck. Helen Mirren on the other hand gave quite excellent performance.  :thumb:

Entertaining movie and especially noteworthy now with the recent light being cast again on the "Blackwater" affairs.
There was a moment there where I got a little terrified by the state of things.

I rented and watched this movie this morning.  It was one of the best rentals I have watched in quite some time.  4 Stars.
