Which path to take?
« on: 24 Aug 2009, 03:16 pm »
I'm undecided on where to go with my setup.

What I have currently:
PS3
DVDO Edge (video upscaler/processor)
Feed Toslink into Modwright Transporter, 2ch setup for movies

Considering changing to a Modwright Oppo and using 2ch analog outs.
Multichannel is out because there's no room for it (Chicago condo).

Would the audio be better for Blu-ray, or just the same because its downmixing to stereo anyway?

An advantage of the Edge is upscaling TV as well as DVD, but I just set it up and haven't noticed enough benefit to justify its existence yet. Maybe I'm doin it wrong. I haven't tried a DVD from the PS3 through it yet, but I feel like there'd be a lot of headache switching the PS3 output resolution so that the Edge scales instead of the PS3.

The Oppo's glowing review re: DVD upscaling and general convenience make it attractive right now.

Basically I'm a little frustrated and looking elsewhere just because. If there's enough benefit in the Oppo I might switch.

You'll get 2 channel Blu Ray audio from the likes of Neil Young, etc at a native 24/192.  Any digital coax/toslink out from a BluRay player will be 24/48 max (a Blu Ray spec'd limitation).  The audio from cd's etc would be better going through the Transporter (since you already have it); a world class tube DAC.  My $.02

Yeah, music's always going to go through the Transporter.

I already know about limits on Blu-ray digital out. Question is, for Blu-ray only, will a limited digital out + Transporter be better or worse or the same than all internal processing + the modded output stage for the Oppo?

I'd also welcome any thoughts on the video processing or general interface side of things.
