Thanks Jim....My SongTowers
« on: 8 Aug 2009, 12:30 am »
Well, I've been a lurker for several months now and have had my SongTowers (actually a 5 channel setup) for a couple months now.  This is my first foray into this hobby, and I'm loving it!!!  It's really getting me back into my music collection which has just been collecting dust for probably the last decade or more.  I had forgotten how much I loved listening to music.  And the surround sound movies aren't bad either :)

Thanks Jim for such a great product and such great service throughout the buying process, as I continually pounded you with questions.  You have another huge fan from the great state of Texas.  Now if I can just figure out how to keep little fingers and hands away from those woofers and tweeters so I can leave the grilles off (and get my wife on board as well).

Here's my obligatory pic, if I've attached it correctly.  Standard walnut, very elegant and matches the rest of the furniture (well not the kid's kitchen in the background, but some of the other pieces in the room).

Thanks to all who contribute to this site.  You've taught me a lot through your own experiences that has helped me make a great, educated purchase with these speakers, along with other audio equipment.  Without these message boards, I'm not sure I would have ever taken the leap, as the whole process is so daunting when you are trying to start out.

Nice speaker.  Nice toy kitchen, too.  I better not let my two younger kids see the photo, or I might end up with another toy kitchen.  Yikes.

OITP, I totally understand that.

It's a daily challenge to keep the toys out of the soundstage (as you can see from pic that wasn't working yesterday).  When the family left a couple weekends ago, I was able to clean out the room, set everything up exactly as I want it, and man, I got some great soundstaging (at least to me, keep in mind this is my first foray into this).  It was pretty awesome how the individual instruments would image on some of the recommended CD's on this forum that I've picked up.

I have 3 kids under the age of 5, so my other concern initially was how many toys I would find after day 1 put in the back of the speaker through the port :nono:.  Fortunately I haven't had to deal with that yet!

On the 2-ch side, typically a Squeezebox Classic -> Monarchy DIP Upsampler -> Monarchy NM24 -> AVA Insight Double 240.

On the 5.1-ch side, I still have my old A/V receiver (a 5-yr old Denon) that I eventually plan to update into separates.  But works pretty good for now.

Wow, 5 channels of Salk goodness! Nice!! Sometimes I wonder if I should have put my HT2-TL $$ towards a 5 channel ST system instead, but I am so very happy with the 2TLs I think it is too late to ever consider parting with them. If I ever finish off the basement I might have to reward myself with two or three more!!

Hello,

Congrats on your Salks!! Jim makes  fine speaker the ST's are very nice all around. I have had a pair of dome ST's since January and they still make me smile!

Sounds like your 5.1 setup with ST's is 'heat'  aa

All the best
Alex

What are your impressions of the Double 240?  Have you compared it to other amps powering your STs?  Congrats on your new system.

Tone Depth,

I'm probably not the best to comment as this is the first and only separate amp I have ever owned.  But even still, I think the system sounds fantastic and have no second thoughts on any of the pieces I've purchased.  I can tell you that they have plenty of power.  If anything, I need a way to attenuate the signal from the NM24 as I can't turn the preamp volume up past about 9:00, without a wife and kids screaming to turn it down.
