Up for sale is this Behringer DCX2496 I modified as a near clone of the units Mike Galusha made famous here on AC for Emerald Physics and VMPS setups.  He guided me through the various options to come up with the best sounding and most flexible DCX possible for my Emerald Physics CS2's.  The only major difference I know of is I did not include an internal Felix power conditioner.  The modifications are as follows:

- Didden active input/output board replacement kit (Pilgham Audio).  Completely replaces input stages and output stages, adds front panel LED level adjust display, and remote capability.
- Install Oettle sample rate converter/master clock replacement kit (Pilgham Audio)
- Install two Oettle mini-regulator kits with DC power line filters (Pilgham Audio)
- Replace XLR AES/EBU input with bulkhead BNC jack and hardwire coax to main board transformer.  Convert from 120 ohm to 75 ohm SPDIF input.
- Replace all bypass electrolytics with BG or Panasonic FC/FM series caps
- Remove extra SMD A/D converter to reduce power/noise (no longer needed)
- Replace all three SMD AKM4393 DACs with AKM4396 DACs

There are many schools of thought out there on what can be achieved with the DCX (please don't debate it in my FS thread).  I believe this is the best combination of those choices if having the remote capability is something you need/want.  The only improvements at this point might be discrete SS or tube outputs but you'd likely lose the remote capability in the trade-off.  For CS2's this is a great combination, allowing LF/HF amp balancing with the remote.

For those that might attempt these mods, the labor is unbelievable, so I don't suggest it for the casual DIY'er.  This is a chance to get one turn key at a reasonable price.

At least $2k invested (even with my cheap labor).
Asking $1400 $1250.  Buyer to pay shipping and 3% Paypal fees.  Sorry, US sales only.

Thanks for your interest!

  • Dutch and Dutch 8C's…yes they are that good!
Having owned an upgraded DCX (with pretty much all of the same parts), I can definitely say that the improvements that Tom has made will make a substantial upgrade to the unit's performance.

This would make a great addition to any active or bi-amp system.
