Tweeter thoughts
« on: 23 Jul 2009, 01:03 pm »

I have the RM30m and I have been experimenting with active crossovers. I am probably not the only one but this resulted in an evaporated tweeter ribbon, Brian was nice enough to send a replacement tweeter and tell me what replacement ribbon would work.

But in thinking about tweeters:

1. I have not been able to get a replacement ribbon in with the nice corrugated folds of the original Arum Cantus is this bad?

2. Even originals when de-horned don't have the nice corrugations.

3. My concern is that one of my tweeters is about 10 db below the other. this may because of the amp or crossover but it may also be the ribbon not being perfectly centered. Aurum cantus has instruction on their web site for ribbon replacement which I followed. Any on have ribbon replacement suggestions?

4. What about capacitors to protect the tweeter? (I have a 250uF polypropelene should be 1000hz depending on impedence stock aurum cantus is 6 ohm VMPS web page says Brian uses modified 8 ohm version)

5. I am doing better so far without my CDWG - what about adding foam surround if no CDWG? What about a new Grill so the drivers aren't exposed?

6. What about a new tweeter? With an active crossover we have more freedom to design a crossover and we don't have the restrictions Brian had with the passive - What about swapping tweeters and putting in a Fountec or Raal ribbon or even a different Arum Cantus.

Just a few thoughts and I wonder if anyone else has suggestions or thoughts?

Tom, I can only help you with this one.  New grill covers to replace the CDWG are fairly easy to make.  I did that for my V60s.

Hi Tom,

Somehow I missed this post and might have a few comments.

First contact B, directly regarding protection caps, or tweeter swaps.

Brian is a rather unique speaker designer in that he assembles his "parts/speaker components" more like an artist "blends colors" on his paint brush.

Each driver is either specially selected, modded, or built to give him the sonic blending he wants.  A good example is the dual 10" woofers of the RM40.  I have been told it is the same speaker hardware "exactly", but with DIFFERING Magnetization Strengths to allow him to get the BLEND of performance between the two.

Now comes the D-OXO, and ALL the possibilities of "micro" adjustments and electronic manipulation in the digital domain of the signals that can then be sent to each driver.

This allows B, to expand and explore additional combinations based on what he already knows of how the driver combos "interact".  But VMPS'rs are of all types and many like to explore a little themselves with the new found freedom of the "digital domain" of the D-OXO.  Lots of fun, and the end results will depend on how "knowledgeable, experienced, and maybe even lucky" you at finding the right combinations.  By lucky, I mean that without Brian's comprehensive understanding of the interactions he has built into the particular driver complement, you might never happen upon an acceptable or stellar sonic using a conventional approach.

So knowing this, I would suggest using and saving the "original" set up that came in your D-OXO, and maybe creating separate exploratory curves that offer promise (and fun) to the DIY 'er.

Swap the tweeters out and make sure the low tweeter plays low in the other channel.  Sounds like a bad transformer to me, in which case replacing the ribbon element won't help.

Corrugation should be even and the diaphragm straight or it should be replaced.
