Need good non-prescription sunglasses (for female friend). I have prescription sunglasses, for an arm and a leg.

What brands of good quality, reasonably priced sunglasses are you or your wife/girlfriend familiar with? I can think of Ray-Ban, but then I am lost.

That's like asking what underwear should I buy my wife. ;)  Gee, uh, the pink ones? haha

Seriously, the best optics and scratch protection I've seen are Maui Jim's.. but that's practical.. She may like the huge pseudo-70's looking ones that all the kids are wearing now.. or like certain tint colors..

The only way to know is let her try some at a sunglass store that lets you walk outside on a sunny day.

Since this is obviously a question related to photography, be aware that polarized sunnies can make it a little difficult to see the LCD. So she may find that a less expensive, lightly-tinted pair would aid her photographic endeavours.

Funny, my prescription sunglasses are Maui Jim...they are over the top expensive :( but they will take a progressive bifocal prescription

JohnR this is the only place I could think to post this since it deals with optics  :)  and I noticed that polarized lenses do play havoc with any kind of LCD especially 'black and white'

Kaenon sunglasses are far and away the best I've tried, and I've tried most brands.  They have better scratch resistance than most glass-lensed glasses, but weigh very little.. even in comparison to other plastic-lensed glasses. After 3-4 years they are still in almost perfect shape, both the lenses and frames have now lasted longer than any other glasses I've ever had. They are pricey, over $300, but I found mine on the Campmor website for 60% off.

I have these, with copper lenses:

+1 on Maui Jim's.

I have a pair and so does the wife.

Funny, I used to lose my cheap pairs all the time, but not these.

How can you lose a pair of Maui Jims, with that hatbox-sized case? I thought Silhouette cases were big...and this picture does not do the case justice

My wife used to love Maui Jim's. The glass was great, but the frames scratched and chipped over time and they wouldn't cover that under warantee.

She now has picked up 2-3 pair of sunglasses from Costco on the cheap and loves them. decent glass and a few different styles that she likes. No worries about them getting scratched - just throw them away and use another pair.

I love Maui Jim sunglasses, I work for Bausch & Lomb and used to get Revo's relatively cheaply before Luxottica bought the brand but the first time I tried on some MJ's I was done with Revo/Ray Ban.

I wore mine a lot, they took a lot of abuse and after two years they didn't have a scratch on them but I did get cracks around the bolt for the bridge. I expected to throw them away but an optometrist friend of mine told me to send them in for repairs. I did that, and was honest with them about how long I'd have them and the fact that I couldn't remember where I bought them, and they replaced the optics and reconditioned them for free. They even sent me a new case and polishing cloth, all for $6 or something in return shipping. Pretty awesome customer service.

if you like retro look (sort of like raybans) you will love moscot http://www.moscot.com/products.asp

I just bought a pair of the Type 1's and have several people have commented on how them.

When I used to wear contact lenses, I bought cheap sunglasses and lost them all the time. Now I have prescription sunglasses and I try pretty hard to make sure I don't lose them... ever

Oh, right... photography... jqp - perhaps she would appreciate an ND filter or two in the gift package to help deal with those bright lighting conditions? ;)

I know, it's crazy- a photography section on a forum about audio equipment gets minimal activity - Who would've thunk it? :P
