Wadia 381 Open House: any interest?
« on: 13 Jul 2009, 04:58 pm »
The Wadia is now well broke in and ready to strut its stuff so I figured I'd open the doors and host a listening session if anyone is interested.

I'm thinking either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon...

Once I get some input back I'll post a final date/time

Mark,

I just picked up Seal's "Live in Paris" and it ROCKS!!!
the band is a bit distant in certain tracks but all in all I give it a high recommendation :thumb:

No Barber or Krall will be played this time  8)

I'm in the process of writing a review in the critics section

It looks like the 381 also plays MP3, FLAC and WMA files from CDR. What is the maxiumum resolution that these files can be 16/44/, 24/44, 24/48, 24/96 or higher?

Chris,

The limit is 24/96 (dictated by the PCM1704 DACs?) so the 176/192k and higher stuff is a no-go.
I have already sampled some 24/96 from NAIM and 24/88 from LINN (both FLAC).
FWIW the manual says it will not play WMA loseless

That's great. I'll be happy to come by and bring lots of 24/96 FLAC tunes.

Excellent!   Have you heard any of the Antonio Forceoni Quartet on NAIM?
I have the AFQ Live disk and it's amazing!!!

It was a real nail-biter... out of the box it sounds constricted, nasally and somewhat strident.
Algorithm C seemed to help shave off some of the harsh siblance with poorer recordings.

Started "smoothing" out after ~250 hrs and sound stage expanded after 300...
though took a full 400 hrs (per Steve H.) to plateau.
Be patient and you will be rewarded :thumb:

Well I have under 2 weeks to go before I get my 381 from GSNC. Can't wait to join you in the listening experience. What are you using for amp/leads/speakers etc? Are you using balanced/unbalanced outputs into pre/power?
Any info helps
