Are you ready for Thingamaknobs!?
« on: 9 Jul 2009, 07:29 pm »

Tired of those old metal knobs? Sick of getting shocked when you touch your volume after walking on the carpet? Ever wondered if switching to wood can make a sonic difference? Still looking for something to enhance your significant other's appreciation of your stereo? Wish you could eat all the fried chicken you want, without worrying about the fat?

Well, I haven't figured out the chicken thing, but I CAN make you some sweet knobs! You can have them made (by hand) from Gabon ebony, maple, cherry, bubinga, cocobolo, purple heart, zebra, blood wood and just about any other hard wood you can come up with. They can be shaped to your specs, have possition markers of any size and they all come standard with bronze bushings and extra long setscrews.

"Are you ready for Thingamaknobs?"

I was one year ago.  I e-mailed and asked if you had any Mesquite, but I never received a reply.

How much do you want?  I just cut quite a bit in my front pasture.  Most of the heartwood would make very nice knobs.

I'm sorry Steve, but I never received an inquiry about mesquite. I don't have any on hand, but I can get it... looks like we might even have an offer from Scott. If it's dry, I can make them right away... if not we can wait or try to find some.

I'm only needing one large and one small knob.  Apparently no one else has asked about mesquite, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to acquire any sizable board.

I live in Arizona, so I thought it might be nice to have some native wood.  I built myself an AV rack and wanted to build it out of mesquite.  But besides it being very expensive, I was unable to find enough quantity that was dry.

Scott, thanks for the offer.  I don't know what it would take to make a turnable blank, whether it has to be a board cut along the length, or if you can just cut a slice off of the diameter.

I have a local Woodworker's Source here.  I'll check and see if they have any small hobby/carving pieces available, as most of what they have is kiln dried.

It it turns out to be too much of a hassle, I would probably go with something you have in stock.

Thanks,

Steve

I have access to mesquite. Let me know what size and color (red or black) you want and I can probably get it for you. It should run you about $35-$40 per knob.

Do you have inserts for push-on to a shaft with flat side, or do you only manufacture these to install with an external setscrew?

Steve

I have only made them with setscrews as the fit and hold are top notch and no one has ever requested different. If you want then to be push-on, I'll glady make them for you. I aim to please!  :D
