I'm lucky that I live only 75 miles from one of the brightest minds in audio today. I'm speaking of Danny of GR Research. Danny was kind enough today to let me listen to his latest open baffle speaker system, large coaxial with servo 12's.
First let me say that I have been on a quest for many years to decrease the amount of money invested in my audio system while improving it's sound at the same time. This is the reason I built my own speakers some years ago, the Linkwitz Orions. The Orions gave me the best sound I have ever had in my home at a fraction the cost of many of my previous speakers, Green Mountain Audio, Merlin, Soundlab and others.
I took my MacBook to Danny's today, ran it through his DAC 60, Dodd preamp and monster statement Dodd amps. All of this driving the most dynamic speakers I have ever heard, his latest open baffle speakers. The dynamics of this speaker system is nothing short of amazing. The servo controlled 12's are capable of going lower and stronger than anything I have ever heard. And the 97db efficiency of the upper end makes it a breeze to drive to very real levels.
Oh did I mention they sound really good too? I was amazed at the soundstage offered by these speakers, fantastic depth of stage and placement.
No Danny is not paying me to gush over these speakers, it is very well deserved. I thought my Orions were the greatest things ever, now I'm not so sure. I have been shopping for better amplification for my Orions, 6 channels minimum, i.e. expensive. Danny's latest speaker has the same great characteristics of the Orion with it's own bass amps and the need for only one top end amp. I can purchase one of these speaker kits and one of Dodd's new battery amps for no more than the cost of decent amps to run my Orions.
I think I just found a way to have even less money in my sound system and have better sound, thanks Danny.
