KT66 question
« on: 29 May 2009, 11:59 am »
Hi Guys,

Are KT66s and 6L6s interchangeable?  My amp accepts 6L6 tubes and I wonder if it will take KT66 as well.  What got me thinking about it is all the ebay ads for KT66 that also show 6L6 in the heading.  If they aren't interchangeable, what are the differences?

Yes. There's a good explanation of this here http://www.srl.utu.fi/~tke/MesaBoogie/Tube/6l6review.html
Enjoy!

KT66's  need more heater current (1.27a) Than a 6L6 (.9a). This may or may not be a problem depending on your amp's power transformer spec's. If you can use El34's, there won't be any problems.

So if my amp will accommodate EL34s, 6L6s, KT88s and 6550s it should have the power trans to handle KT66s?

That's what I would think, yes. You might have to change the bias a little. Just keep track of how much heat they dissipate.
