Sweet ,, I just picked up my VTL compact 100's yesterday,,repaired and modified to accept 6L6's,,, goodbye EL-34's,, these tubes,,and amps for that matter are very intimate, organic, detailed,,and just give me goosebumps with the 6L6. Congratulations to the winner/owner of those tubes.

$600.00 Lucky? nonono...  That's preposterous. That's $75.00/tube.  Smart shopping will get these for a fraction of the price. They are nice tubes- but not at that price.

It wasn't me who won that. I'd rather win an entire amplifier for that amount. There's a Fisher 800C in nice shape for $600.00.

A quad of TungSol 5881's is $65.00 if you shop around. A quad of TungSol 6550's is $100.00 in the right place.

Do give us some details about the 6L6 sound vs. EL34.  It seems that tube is shunned (or at least overlook) all too often in the audio community.

My $0.02 in on 6L6's vs El34's: One is not better than the other. I used to believe the 6L6 was better. It has many admirable attributes- low filament draw, easy to load, etc... it is indeed a favorite of mine!

But- the thing is- there is a place for everything. Tubes have to be thought of as tools. Some tools are interchangeable without consequence. This is not always the case. It has to do with the output transformer's primary impedance and power supply voltage for the most part.

Bottom line: One is better than the other in specific applications where they were designed to work best. It's not a question of one tube type being better than the other.  Naturally, someone may like the sound of one over the other even if the application's circuit isn't just right and there is nothing wrong with that as long as the plate voltage is within tolerance.
