Hey Jim,

Are the beasty beauties going to have an official appellation by the time of our Northwest GTG?!    I know you want to........... aa

If the "improved" FAL drivers pass muster, we hope to start building the model before the end of the month.  In that case, you will see (and hear) them at the GTG.

I am not sure Wilson builds all of their drivers in house.  I am not really sure they build any although I am sure if they don't they either have someone build to their specs are have them modfiied.

Wilson doesn't make any of their drivers. The buy them from Focal, Scanspeak, and SEAS. They claim they are made to their specifications, but from what I can tell, that isn't really the case, unless the vendor does a special sort for Wilson. The only modification I am aware of is that Wilson changes the back loading on the Focal inverted dome tweeter. You don't even want to know about their crossover construction. Their cabinet material is pretty interesting though.

Thanks Jeff, that was my understanding as well, but I was trying to be "nice" which is unusual for me.  I will say that my understanding is that a lot of the so called "modifications" are very minor changes so that a mfg can put it in advertising.  I don't think of that of Jim because he is so small (in the larger scope of things-Jim don't take offense) that if he asks he actually wants it. Just to be clear, I actualy know Jim personally and he is one of the most honest people I know and I have dealt with some of the biggest companies and their CEOs' in the world.  Nuff said, less I get in trouble. :)

With regard to cabinet construction, WmAx over at Audioholics is insistent on inert cabinet construction and I have contracted him to build me his ultimate but it keeps getting delayed and I am suspect but hopeful (I have real money invested and I am worried).  That being said, I have written Tom Nousaine as a friend and he says these cabinets that eliminate resonances above a certain frequency are probably marketing. I am probably misquoting so if any are interested, I will dig out the email. I think sometimes Tom is dismissed, but that is a big mistake in my opinion as he has been through it all (but he is a friend so maybe I am bias).

PPS   Feel free to give WmAx trouble as I have a big investment  and his ego and my money are at stake.  In fact, you may be able to help me but alas I think I made a mistake.  Never ever pay 100% up front.  I AM a fool but then again I am not an expert on manic/depression (and I don't know that has anything to do with anything but WmAx SEEMS to be really smart from his posts).

If all goes well (which FAL indicates it will), we will be ready to announce the model and start making sawdust!

Kewl!  I can't wait to hear the reports of all the Veracity owners on how the Beast compares.

Fellas, I will be looking for detailed reports!

Starting a thread at Audioholics entitled, "how's the progress coming on my cabinet's, wmax?" would do the trick.  :)  Then he'll be forced to finish.

If he doesn't finish the work to your satisfaction, or he doesn't refund you in full, I'd expect no less than for you to out him over at Audioholics.

I know that will happen, Jim.  The question was...have you decided upon a name?!   :D

I imagine Jim will announce the name when he officially announces the speakers are available.

Salk HT Quartus.

Quartus, in Latin, literally means "fourth".

Have fun,

I think Jim has pretty much made up his mind.  The issue is more whether the new FAL driver is a go.  It looks like I'll be getting the new mini-beast (10" woofer) cabinet and a new FAL today.  Looks like a fun weekend.

consider this beating a dead horse, but to my understanding i feel like the ht4 name isn't out of line (and i know i've voiced this opinion before).

ht4 is (roughly) 2x the cost of ht3
ht3 is (roughly) 2x the cost of ht2
ht2 is (roughly) 2x the cost of ht1

If I am not mistaken, Mach 1 was used by Radio Shack in the '70s for their tip offering, a 2 way with a 15" woofer and a horn loaded tweeter.

Hopefully, the new Beast will be breaking down barriers in audio.

The first manmade device to break the actual sound barrier was the whip.  Now the "Salk Whip" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as a desirable name, but what the hey...the metaphor is fun.   :D

Well, since I know a "mounter" of speaker drivers at SEAS, I beg to differ.
Of course, all one can say is that ... you can't buy them out of a catalogue. But it is possible to have them built, as one off builds and smaller series. SEAS do offer custom builds just like Flexunits does.
Wilson from what I "gather" gets smaller series, especially, partly, built for them.
Scan Speak is no longer under the Tymphany umbrella by the way... (Tymphany needs to stop saying they are..)
