at akfest; initial reports have not been too positive? hard to tell from what i've read. always a gamble debuting a speaker in a hotel room, of course - hard to make it sound good. anyone have any thoughts, because i'm basing a couple of future plans on how these sound...

ok so now that they are out, i can talk about it. the cs3.2's are the replacement for the cs3's and wally from underwood says that they are a dramatic improvement (he told me about them a month ago, but i promised i wouldn't talk about them til they are released). the cs3's seemed to me to be the ultimate 'flavor of the month' product. when they came out talk was everywhere about them, but not really a peep since then - i have yet to here a word about the cs1's. it will be interesting to hear what is said (if anything) about the cs3.2's. i have been seriously thinking about taking a chance on these if the feedback is good.

I think you are a little confused on your model numbers...

The Emerald Physics CS2.3's (not 3.2's) are the replacement for the very well reviewed CS2's - not the CS3's.  The CS3's were just released and are a brand new model.

The CS2's were not a flavor of the month product, but for a smaller company, you can only keep the publicity high on a particular model for so long.  I owned (and dealt) CS2's and definitely thought they were the real deal.

So when Clayton calls the CS 2.3 a true 3 way speaker I get the impression that what was a 12" waveguide for a compression driver is now a 12"  driver with a coaxial compression driver using the cone as the mouth of the horn - like the Hawthorne, but 12". Is this right?

It couldn't be the P-Audio driver that Danny Ritchie was experimenting with, could it? I imagine that would be too expensive.

I wonder how low the CS3 will go. I doubt is anything less than 60hz, and that considering the heavy equalization.

I heard the 3's at AKFest and thought they sounded pretty good. Of course, all the usual limitations of "show" conditions were at play, but if I had the opportunity I would not mimd spending some time with them in my room for a demo. I thought they were promising.

oops damn dyslexia 2.3, 3.2, 3. too many numbers for me wee brain. no disrespect meant by the 'flavor of the month' comment, and i don't think it has anything to do with marketing. everyone was talking about them on the forums when they came out, and almost all the comments were very positive. i was just suprised when the cs1's came out there hasn't been a PEEP that i can find online in almost a year now. it's like they never came out? i mean someone must have bought them or at least heard them?

oh another interesting thing, if i was hearing wally correctly, is the new 3's are intended mostly as a home theater (5.1) speaker? which, if that is what they intended is not mentioned anywhere i can find on there website. them and the new 2.3's sure are purdy looking though, should really end those 'ugly speaker' complaints of the old ones.

From the photos I think CS2 still looks better.

I personally think the new CS3 are much better looking than the CS2. 

They are also much smaller so they should fit in many places that CS2 speakers would not.

I wish I would have had a chance to get a better listen to the CS3 at AKfest.

I am also trying to find out more about how the DBX PX is being utilized.  I look forward to learning more about the design.

I have never thought that a cone would be a very good waveguide but Clayton is pretty good at squeezing good sound out of mediocre components.
