Thanks Tekwiz.

That helps me to understand how my amp might fail if I ignore the impedence specifications.

I will avoid that mistake.

I agree that the name change for ADS is crazy, but public perception is often crazy, too.

As for a/d/s, they  made great equipment and stood behind it.
I once sent back my solid state amp to a/d/s years after I purchased it and they fixed it
for free.  I got decades of enjoyment from their stuff.  I don't even know if they are still
in the audio business but they have my respect and appreciation.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for all the info.  Do you have any advice for low cost buffer/active crossover?

You must be a McIntosh person. $3K for a two way crossover is not too pricey :|

I used to sell paintings for anywhere between $20,000 to over a million.  So audio prices are tiny.  Unfortunately, it was not my gallery and I don't work there anymore!

Eventually I'll have a 3way horn set up and I'll look into the Bryson, until then any alternative to Marchand, like these, are good.

Thanks,

Gregg

Another analogy that may help describe the amp driving too low of an impedance would be like shifting your car into neutral and stepping on the gas. The engine needs a load (impedance) or it will rev too fast and possibly break down.

Jeff, Thanks for your great replys on this topic ! good info for sure ! FWIW, those of us with Martin Logan (electrostatics) have a whole 'nother can of worms to deal with. Our panels are highly capacitive  and thus require top flite amplfier stability and our low impedence drop is inverse to what the dynamic speakers represent (low imp occurs well up in the freq range, thankfully where little music content and susequent energy is required). when driving esl panels with tube amplification that does not incorporate wide bandwidth some softening of the highs can be noticed.
