Dual Servo box completed w/ Pictures
« on: 25 Apr 2009, 04:28 pm »
So I started with this idea:

And ended up with this:

I just finished the box yesterday.  The protective film over the high gloss black Formica laminate hasn't been peeled off in those pictures.

I have the drivers and amp in it now, but didn't take any pictures because it was pretty dark by the time I was done putting it together last night, and by then I just wanted to give it a listen.

I will take some pictures of the assembled sub later.

Ok, so a few completed sub pictures.

And, no I haven't brought myself to pull of the protective film yet.

And here's some change balancing on the sub as it was pushing 109dB peaks. :D

At those levels the sub about was the only thing that wasn't vibrating or buzzing.

The long story short....  It sounds great with my Neo-2X's.  The Neo-2X's are set to small and crossed over at 80Hz, and they can't keep up if I crank it.  I guess I didn't need to go dual, but what fun would that have been?  :icon_twisted:

When do we get to see it without the plastic covering? :)

Good job Dude! Love the nickel trick.  :o What's the Formica Lam # that you are using?

It's just the standard Formica 909 Black in the polished finish.

OK, so here are the pictures.  Being that it's gloss black it's hard to photograph.

There isn't really a white edge. Basically I need to clean up the edges a little.  It's some contact cement that you're seeing.

Thats good.

I had no idea this stuff existed. I was so inpired by this I just stopped at the Lowes on the way home from work, but they didn't have anyone to help me find this or price it (said I should try tomorrow).

I found some online. about $34/sheet, shipping was expensive though.

Thanks!

I would be surprised if Lowes can get it for you since Home Depot couldn't get it, but I suppose it's possible.

Very nice subs. Any comments about their performance on the way? I will have some OB servo subs soon enough as time permits. The CAD drawing have been completed for some time now. I only need to get caught up on the benches so I can get to building them.

Here's what I posted on AVSforum last week.

Well, I spent some time with ETF today and my room has a huge spike (like 12db+) at 50Hz.  I messed with the parametric EQ in my Pioneer Elite for both the main channels and the sub, then messed with the single band parametric EQ on the sub.  It blends better now, but the room definitely needs some room treatments.  Being that it's also our home office / library I'm not sure how crazy I can go on the treatments. :o

I also think some of my feeling that it's not blending well is from the vibrations in the floor.  Sound travels faster in wood than air, and I swear the vibrations my feet feel are tell my brain the bass is arriving out of sync with the mains.

I've spend some additional time with them since them.  It seems to blend into the system pretty well now.  I plan to make some OC703 (or similar) traps and put them in the front corners of the room to start with and see where I need to go from there.  I suspect I will need to add an outboard EQ for the sub like I have in my great room, but we'll see.

Front of the room: (pardon the mess)

Very nice Seth.

Are you going to try something like a Subdude (or DIY version) for the floor vibration?  When we moved, I went from carpet on concrete to original hardwood floors and it's a very different experience.  I'm considering trying something like a SubDude myself.

I'm not sure.  The box is 100% vibration free when playing even at very loud SPLs, so I'm not sure that the vibration in the floor is being transferred from the box to the floor.
