Superclock vs. Ultraclock

Steve, what's the difference in sound quality for a Superclock vs. an Ultraclock?

Would an Ultra Turbo3 outperform an Super PaceCar?

Good question.  We are splitting hairs here, but if you run the Off-Ramp 3/Ultraclock off battery or 15VDC supply and use a Locus Design Axis USB cable, it might beat the Pace-Car/SC4 running from a Wall-Wart.

The Ultraclock:

1) takes more time to break-in
2) is a special order item - 2 months
3) is more detailed
4) requires better power and higher voltage
5) is more than twice the price

Is it a different power supply than for the "normal" Turbo2?  Could I still use my BPT battery supply, or would it need to be modified for an Offramp Ultraclock?

One thing I think I might like about using an Ultraclock Offramp is that I could switch out sources without having to get my PaceCar retuned.

I simply love my Off-Ramp 3 w/Superclock 4 being powered by a Paul Hynes SR3-12  and using a Locus Design Nucleus USB cable and a Crystal Cable Digit to my processor. As much as I'm hoping to witness (and meet) Steve Nugent's other computer product lineup in what I'm hoping will be an upcoming NY RAVE Demo, I'm more than ecstatic with the fidelity upgrades I've received OVER my old cryoed Trends UD 10.1 w/Channel Island VDC-SB power supply using a Locus Design Axis USB cable. It was literally a nite/day component upgrade which for me was an eyeopener after what the Axis USB cable did for the Trends/CI setup.

I thought I read once when Steve was developing the Off-Ramp 3 where he stated he thought the Supertuner 4 was more musical to his ear as the Ultraclock was too highly detailed for his taste. Same has been said about the Axis over the Polestar though,,, can't wait to see what Jeff Day has to say about the Nucelus.

Cheers,
Robin

It can run on the same supply, but Ultraclock sounds better with 15VDC supply.

Actually Dave Clark has it and is using it as his new reference USB, he still uses the Axis and Polestar as well.  I don't think Dave will let Jeff have it, ha!

Steve now has an Axis (5 footer) and a Polestar (a 16 footer) that I made him for the BAAS demo and he is going to use the same at RMAF.

Peace,

Lee

Just curious as to who makes the battery supply unit.  I didn't think that Empirical had one.

I discontinued my BPS, but I can still do PBS, which is a charger, battery and cable for $150.00 plus shipping and PayPal fee.

I ran out of chassis for BPS and I didnt want to fab any more because I want all my battery supplies to be LI and in matching chassis.  I'll be getting to these new battery box designs this summer.

What's a PBS & LI?  Will this work with other manufacturers USB DACS?  So are you saying that it's the same as what will be done this summer just in a different case?

PBS = Poor-Mans Battery Supply.  LI = Lithium Ion.

I will be designing this summer two supplies, both LI-based.  One for the Overdrive DAC and the other for the Pace-Car and Off-Ramp.  The PC and OR supplies output 12VDC at about 1 amp.

I'm looking to add this power supply to my off-ramp 3 w/ ultra clock:
Keces DC-115
http://www.acoustic-fun.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=73

As it is switchable between 12VDC and 15VDC, does it mean I can use 15 VDC safely with the off-ramp 3?

Yes, that is safe.  The word from Audiocon is that 15V is actually better, but I didn't notice a lot of difference.
