I do not own a Mac right now, but will be considering a Mac Mini as a server soon.  As I know nothing about Macs and very little about I-Tunes, this guide is very helpful to me.  I knew about Apple lossless, but was not aware of how to use FLAC.  Can I-Tunes work with high resolution files in 24/96?

The audio engine in a mac, Core Audio, can support up to 32/192 files.

What is Core Audio?  And does that mean I-Tunes will support 24/96, or will a different player be required?

iTunes supports 24/96, however you need to match the sample rate and bit rate of the song played in iTunes in Audio Midi to get 24/96 output

Hey, I need an advice, too. apple.com states that a MacBook has an audio out, which is  a combined digital out/analog output (minijack) So, can a regular optical Toslink cable be used? I am thinking about using an external DAC for 24/96 conversion from www.HDtracks.com and itunes. Which software will work the best for it? Thank you!

not a regular toslink, but one that has a mini toslink on one end.  http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022902&p_id=1558&seq=1&format=2
