Now what?---PD75 death squeal!

I'm in the process of auditioning the Ack! dAck.  My <10 year old Pioneer PD75 has developed a very audible whine/squeal corresponding the the rotation of the platter (stable platter mechanism).  I've opened it up and it is definately coming from the platter mechanism.   No local servicing, probably too expensive anyway given it current worth.  I knew this day would come.

I now have to find a new transport or all new player.  Trouble is, do I replace with another several year old dedicated transport, univeral player/transport, one-box cd-player (not entirely sure I'm going to keep the Ack!).  With the purchase of the Ack! + transport/player I could almost reach a player I've lusted after--Naim CD5 (used).

I've searched and read about alot of decent low-priced players used as transports with good success, Sony DVP7700, Pioneer universals, Marantz SA8260---get SACD as a side benefit, as well as older dedicated transports--CEC 5100's, CAL delta's, Theta pear's/basic's.

Also, if anyone knows of a servicing tech that could possibly fix my beloved stable platter pioneer on the cheap, I'd be open to that as well.

By the way,  my thoughts on the Ack! dAck to follow.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the motor is dying. If that is the case, then you're out of luck (unless you purchase another player that uses the same motor), as that part is OOP.

Best of luck with whichever route you decide to go. All are fine, but you just have to decide what meets your needs, and what design choices you prefer.

Actually Pioneer DOES have the spindle motor for a PD-75 in stock. See here http://parts.pioneerelectronics.com/model.asp?modelNum=PD75

It is a $68.44 part though...

Interesting. I was under the impression that all of the Pioneer stable platter transports used the same motor, which retailed for $80 and is now OOP, from what I have been told. This is very interesting. Thanks bubba!

Thanks for the info, I'll look into it.  I didn't know parts for the stable platter were still available.  I would need to find someone for the install, but overall this sounds like the best option.

thanks,

Brad

Brad,

let me know if you can't get ahold of the motor from Pioneer...i've got a busted pioneer player w/ a good stable platter and motor that i've been keeping as back up for my CDT that i'd be willing to sell to you if u need it...
