CI Audo VDC 9.0 on Mac Mini?
« on: 3 Apr 2009, 01:00 am »
Does anyone know if this can be used on a Mac Mini?  There has been some talk about using an upgraded PSU on the Mac Mini and thought that this might be able to work.

Dusty?

It looks like a Mac Mini takes 18.5VDC @ 6A, so no, a VDC 9 would not work.

Well that stinks.  Maybe Dusty can mod it so it will work?  I would also like to use one on the external hard drives as well....I'm using the 1TB iomega Mini Max drives.

Deleted as it was inappropriate to post this on CI Audio forum. PM me if you want an alternative.

I did some Googling, but it should be printed on your Mac Mini power brick.

Thank you.

Hmm.  I guess CIA has no interest in this.

CIA or any manufacturer might be interested in making production units that will cater to a market.  The issue with the idea of making an improved PS for the Mac Mini in order to address sound quality improvements will fall into a really small niche category.

If you are serious about it, then there might be other alternatives that will either cost you $$$$ or serious DIYing.  One off specialty PS will not be affordable in any sense.

One of the most talented PS designers/engineers is Peter Daniels of AudioSector fame.  Maybe you can Email him, I got a nicely made outboard PS for my 47 Labs Shigaraki from him.  Nevertheless, it was not how I can say affordable, and he will need to see the PS the Mini is using, unless he is extremely familiar to it.  I have a MacMini and I can say that its powersocket might not be the most common, which also call into attention that if the PS designer cannot get a socket and a plug in part, then perhaps it might mean physically hacking into the Mini to power it.

Much food for thought.

My Googling also indicated that power wasn't the only thing on the Mac Mini power connector, there's also something called iSense to deal with.  If you do some Googling, you can find some DIY pages about integrating Mac Minis into cars that discuss the power input needs.
