Effect of "sound check" ?
« on: 21 Mar 2009, 06:10 pm »
I want to use my ipod as a music source for a party.  Ideally I want all the playlist tracks to play at a similar volume.  What does it do if I select sound check in my itunes preferences?  Does it only affect playback on my ipod or does it do something (horrible) to my apple lossless music files on my server?   If the latter, then I'm certainly not doing that!

Thanks

It's the former.

I've also noticed that Sound Check works fine as long as there aren't songs which have a custom volume setting.  If you have some albums turned down Sound Check can make violent volume swings.

I've just realised that there is a sound check option in the menu on the ipod, so that clearly is only affecting the ipod.

Hopefully that should do the trick.

Just be aware that you have to have turned on "Sound Check" on the desktop at least once so iTunes has had a chance to calculate the volume information for each file. It doesn't change the files, but it does keep track of this as metadata. You can turn it off after it's done. If you haven't done this, Sound Check on the iPod doesn't do anything.

Many thanks Watson, I would not have known that!
