Canon 5d MKII

Hi Guys, How many of you own a 5D MKII. I am considering updating my 1D, and am thinking 5D. What do you think of this camera.

Thanks Mr C :D

Hi Mr. C,

Be careful, be very careful.  :D

A couple of years ago, I was just starting my crazy upgrade path in Canon's lineup. I had a 10D and was ready to buy something. The thought of a fairly affordable FF body was too much too ignore and I got the newly released 5D. If I had had any sense, I would have stopped right there. The original 5D was a terrific camera, looking back.

Well shortly thereafter, I decided that I wanted to see what all the hoorah was about regarding the Canon pro bodies. So I bought a very clean very affordable original 1D. But comparing 4MP to 12MP was no contest. But what I wasn't prepared for was the seductive feeling of that big heavy pro body. And more features than I could ever use.

It didn't take long to realize what I wanted was that pro body with a FF sensor. And sure enough, someone (a very reputable FM member) put up a clean, low actuation 1Ds2 and added that he would consider a 5D + cash in the deal. I didn't hesitate and have never looked back.

So if these kinds of nutty things don't bother you, I'm sure you'll love the nicely sized, very popular 5D2. And besides that big ole 16MP sensor, you get HD video as lagniappe.

But be prepared for a big difference in the feel of the bodies, going from your 1D.

Of course, if I've convinced you not to go that route, I've got a very clean, perfectly operating 1Ds2 that you would love and that would allow me to make the next step to the 1Ds3.  :green:  :thumb:

Hi navi, you will love it. I have talked to a few 5D MKI owners who have upgraded to MKII, and all have been pleased. I would have liked a 1D MKIII, but my wife wanted a smalle lighter camera.

I have the 5D2 and it takes amazing pictures.  But, the file sizes are huge which require larger faster memory cards and more storage on your computer.  I added a large external HD and a 1TB backup drive to my system.  I only shoot RAW so I have no idea what the jpg looks like on this camera.  Well, I've never shot jpg on any dslr.  I bought the 5D2 for my trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon this May.

Nothing loaded yet.  I'm working on getting all my pics loaded into Lightroom with appropriate metadata onto the new drive and then backed up.  I've had the 5D about a month now so I've been trying to get used to it.  I will say it requires very good lenses if you intend to print to any size.  I hope to get a few larger prints out on my Epson 3800 this next week.  It's been hectic around here lately, lots of family visiting so not as much free time as I would like.

lenses are EVERYTHING, a 6mp camera with a good lens will out perform a 5dmk2 with some crap on the front of it :)

So what would you describe as "crap" in the L series of cannon lenses

I would email you a raw file but gmail has a 20mb limit for attachments.  If you have somewhere I can up load a large file to I can send you one to play with in your RAW editor.

edit.  If all you want is a jpeg I can convert it and email it, just let me know.

Mr. Content...

I am a Canon fan and have had several DSLRs and many L lens and still do. I also have a 4800 and a 3800 and a R1800 printer to do my thing with.

A FF 5D has always been a desire, but I havent gone that route yet...to much pc and stereo  :D

If you go to http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/

You will see ratings and very many posts by owners of the various L series lens.

I do not have the 24-105...I have so many others and lots of overlap, but this lens is not at the top of ratings for L lens, but not at the bottom either.

Lens that are absolutley wonderful L lens are the 300mmF4L IS or Non-IS. (I have the IS version) its really, really a nice lens for isolating the background etc, the 135mm F2 (rated at 9.9) is as sharp as they come....no IS so good photo habits are required  :D, I could go on, but I dont want this to be a 'see what I have' take a look at mirandas sites and ratings...you may already know about this site...

All the best and great on the new 5D...maybe for my birthday!!

Alex

Did my first Job with the new 5D today.

I love it!!! great with skin tones and contrast
I found the old 5D too flat in colours- It is a good camera but once you've used a H3 with a 31MP digital back you start seeing a lot of problems with 5D files.
The 40D was nice and contrasty but colours were always not right and it was crap with dark detail. It also had lots of trouble reproducing reds.

This image was shot with the 5D mark 2 with a 85mm 1.8 lens. lighting was a monoblock with a beauty dish and honeycomb
