I may have to replace the SATA hard drive in my Dell desktop.  Any recommendations for brand or model?

Thank you, Don

What are your priorities?  Capacity?  Acoustics?  Raw speed?  I have been very happy with the new Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB.  Very quiet and relatively speedy (only 5400 RPM) although you can definitely do better performance wise at the expense of higher vibration and noise.  The WD Black series outperforms but is noticeably noisier.  WD VelociRaptor for high performance.

Hi Don,

3 IFs for you :)

If you can, buy the same SATA HDD that came with your computer.  This way you know it will work 100%.

If you know your way around computers buy the fastest drive you can get as everyone suggested here.  Old bios sometimes newer drives are not detected.

If new HDD worked, then you are golden :thumb:

Good morning.  Most are fairly fungible within their respective types (i.e. differing rotational speeds & varying cache sizes), but you should be aware that recent Seagate (no affiliation with them or any competitor) drives have been having some firmware problems, IIRC.  Not trying to scare you away from them, but you might google any Seagate model before you buy it.  Western Digital drives have always worked well for me (again, no affiliation).  Good luck.  Cordially,

Thanks guys,

That was what I was looking for, information on drives that were reliable and those that were not.  I think my current internal drive is a WD.  I was able to wipe my computer and rebuild it so I guess the drive is working.  Now my computer is working better than it has in a long time.

Even with stumbling through the rebuild it took less time than I spent trying to repair whatever was corrupted in the software or drivers.  I will have to remember that for next time.  It won't take me so long next time since I learned by my mistakes this time.

My external back-up unit is a WD.  I do not turn it on much so I do not know how reliable it is.  It is very quiet so I could recommed it for use in a music server application.
