Looks better than Orion, IMO, and I bet it will sound better too. Looking forward to your review!

Wow, are those pics an accurate representation of the Cherry stain? I love it, that's the look I was planning for, but staright onto BB ply, no veneer.

Could you share some details of the process?

They look fantastic!

Thanks,

Steve.

Thanks for the thumbs up!

They do look similar to the Orions, but I think nicer.....more character?

The plexiglass is the front of the amp stand, you cant tell from the pics but there are
two side rails that the plexi is screwed to. They are about a 1/4" proud, the top and bottom
have no rails, just left open....thought this would be a good way to vent air into the amp.
I wasnt sure what to do with the amps at first, I know from other sub builds that I would
need access to the controls for tweaking. I figured I have the option to hide them or
leave them up front now......they will probably stand beside the OB, it looks slick when
you can just make out the insides through the plexi.

As far as details of the build.....it was pretty straight forward. The first time I picked up
a router was about a year ago, so if I can do it anybody can. The biggest challenge was to
get the sides the same shape. I figured that if I used the router it would give me a clean edge
on the pre veneered sheathing. All I did was to make a jig out of 1/2" MDF, chose two spots
that I knew were going to be hidden on the finished panels, screwed the jig to the panel
and followed the router around it with a bearing bit. They came out with nice clean edges that
I put 1'' veneer on......very simple.

The veneer is Oak, I put Samma water based stain on it...Cherry #113. The one thing that I did
use that I had no experience with was the finish. If your like me working out of your garage, you should try
this stuff.....Minwax wipe on poly. Be warned that is does darken (yellow) your color a bit so you might
not want to use it on light stains. This stuff was a breeze, you just wipe it on and give it a very light
touch with some fine steel wool between coats. I have about six coats on these panels, they
really turned out nice.

The only other thing I did, to work on both sides of the panels at the same time, was to make
temp. stands by screwing 1/2" MDF plates with 3" screws to the bottoms. This way I could
stain and finish both sides of the panel at the same time.

I used PL premium to glue the side panels on, and then used 1 1/4" screws to fasten together.
There is a 3" screw to the panel at the top baffle. The most nerve racking was the glueing, one
slip and it could of got ugly.

I am building the back enclosure for the rear firing tweeter right now, waiting for the glue
to dry.......want to hear them this week-end

I have the new OBs (Venue?) up and running.....
Spent a couple of hours with them this am. and
am giving them a workout right now.
Want to give them 100hrs or so before I give full review.
For right now all I can say is........WOW! These are really nice,
they really fill the room.
Cant believe you can get a kit with this sound for under 2K US.

Thanks Danny.....

Yes, as I said about 100hrs in.....should break in nicely by then.

As far as my listening reference goes.......for open baffle, the only comparison I have for bass would be the
2 Carver ALS shown in the pictures behind the OBs, they each have 4 -12" bass drivers......they turned 22yrs old feb 25......the bass response on the GR OBs is far superior.....quicker, tighter, faster.....I am just now experimenting with tuning
the Rythmic amps to my room.......so its going to just get better.

As far as my main set-up I am using Sunfire amps and preamps, they are driving 2 different sets of arrays.
This is my reference......they sound very good, and I have a hard time finding a speaker for under 10K
that can compete with them. That being said the GR OBs are the first speaker I have in my house that
use dome tweeters, all the others use ribbons or planers......and so far these are keeping up nicely!

For The amp on the OBs I am using a Grant Fidelity A-88 and a Raysonic 128 for source, with MIT interconnects

This is my first time with a fully OB speaker, driven with tubed gear......These are REALLY, REALLY NICE!

Some pics of the temporary amp and source set up below.

Not a hundred hrs yet......more like 20

But they are starting to really smooth out......... aa

I like the open baffle with the servo subs a lot......Was listening to
even in the quietest moments by Supertramp last night and there is a part
where there is a drum beat that is damped almost as soon as it is struck....
These drivers start and stop on a dime. As Danny had mentioned, these are probably
the best drums I've heard reproduced. Piano and sax are also clear, bright and sound very natural.
One other note, as my daughter and I were listening to even in the quietest moments the beginning starts
off with a bird chirping. It starts at the left and works its way over to the right....heard it many times....
what was unusual is that just before the vocals start and the bird leaves you can hear it go straight up....
my daughter looked at me and said "did you hear that bird go up?".....I just smiled and said Yep
Thats all for now.......

How far did you go with the crossover?  Are you using platinum sonicaps or Gen IIs for bypass?

Your description is killing me!

These are so out of my price range and I don't really have room for them but I want them soo bad!

*sigh*

Sorry Corndog my electronic knowledge stops with red wire to red post and black to black.......this was the first crossover
I ever put together.....there was a few e-mails to Danny to get me through it...
As far as components you have to talk to Danny.
I just enjoy building and listening.....been listening for 40yrs....building for 1
but Ive had/have some pretty nice equipment in my house to make a comparison.

Thomas J..... the dome is in the back.....and when the light shines through the P-audio dust cap I can see a cone and
pretty sure there is a dome inside that.... :o

I'll post some pictures of the finished cabinets this week-end.....just have some loose ends to finish.

Well this project is done, when I get them in their proper room I will install the spikes.
This was a really fun build, with about 30hrs on them now they are really coming to life,
the soundstage gets bigger every time I listen. I have read that the pro drivers have
stiffer suspension and will take a little longer to break in....

Heres some pics of the finished cabinets with the wiring complete and the rear firing tweeter installed.

I am very pleased with the results...... :D

Wow! Your new OB's look absolutely fantastic. Great job. I am sure they sound as good as or even better than they look. One question. The rear tweeter looks like a Vifa D27TG45.Is that what it is?

Perry,

Very nice build.

I do have a question though, what is the larger cable for??  I must have missed something about it.

The two speaker wires to the binding posts with bananas are from the main amp.
The two speaker wires from the binding posts with spades are to the servo amp.
The large cable has 4x 14ga wires, these go from the servo amp to the servo subs and
use a speakon connector.

You should be Very proud of that build. They look outstanding! I'll bet the rear firing tweet had a lot to do with the rising of the bird's song.
