The laptop is my everyday unit but would not be used for storing files or running SqueezeCenter. I think I see what you mean about running the desktop headless. I would think that the burner in a newer desktop would be better than the one in my 3 year old laptop? Maybe that does not matter if using a program that scans the disc multiple times and tries to ensure a 100% read.
Pretty much any desktop will come with at least a keyboard and mouse. I don't envision loading a huge number of discs after the initial set-up so it should not be much of a problem if I locate the desktop in the mechanical room -- it does not have the comforts of an office!!
