New e-mail update:

Hello hello!

Well, this a fine way to shade spring into summer.

In May Alex & I savored the locavore bounty of SEATTLE's Pike Place Market and PORTLAND's chefs; chased dragonflies in Bend and Redding; got fêted by loyal friends in SAN FRANCISCO, complete with a green velvet going-away cake (!); crawled under the pub table while Paul Freeman kept drinking in SANTA CRUZ; lounged poolside in L.A. and caught a spellbinding show at Largo by Sara Watkins and closed down a wine bar in SAN DIEGO with Anthology's monitor engineer.

The shows have been incredible--vivid, electric, celebratory evenings, leaving me too grateful for the present moment to call them bittersweet.

Let the adventures continue...

LIVE ALBUM: DIGITAL DOWNLOAD RELEASE JUNE 15

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who bought the live album these past few weeks--and boy there are a lot of you!

The USB FLASH DRIVE is the sleeper hit of the bunch; we sold out of our entire stock days after it became available! We had to rush-ship another order so Southern California wouldn't miss out on the BONUS AUDIO TRACKS, CONCERT VIDEO, MAKING-OF INLAND TERRITORY FOOTAGE and other goodies. Thanks to everyone who bought it early. (You saved some cash too, turns out. Due to an error by yours truly, the last email went out with a let's-call-it-introductory price of $20, instead of $25...)

You can find the CD, special-edition art book and USB drive in the viennateng.com store:
http://viennateng.portmerch.com/

and, of course at live shows.

The DIGITAL RELEASE hits online retailers like iTunes, Amazon, etc on JUNE 15.

Off to register for classes. First semester: ecology, social institutions & environment, stats and finance. Spent way too many hours this weekend starring things in the course catalog and building a spreadsheet with IF(OR()) formulas. Lord help me.

Love,

New update from Vienna:

Hello from a most beautiful summer.

I've been savoring the rarest of gifts: a whole month of free time at home. I've wandered the rooms of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and the Frick Collection, gotten delightfully lost in Central Park, seen the Union Square Greenmarket in early morning light, as the cascades of vegetables and flowers and rounds of bread and cheese pour into the rows of white tents. I've hopped on stage a few times a week to accompany amazing musicians, jammed with the neighbors on our building's rooftop deck, and gone for broke on Disney tunes in a karaoke bar. I couldn't even get mad when my bike was stolen after an epic Sunday ride through Brooklyn. This is a city that can often feel indifferent to your presence, even downright hostile. But right now New York seems determined to see me off in style, and to make perfectly clear how much I'm going to miss living here.

Also been writing music on guitar and training in capoeira (just got my first cordão on Sunday!). Meanwhile Alex's doing solo shows and learning Beethoven piano sonatas. It's only a matter of time before I enter a button-down shirt phase and Wong starts wearing flower pins in his hair...

-------------------------
UPCOMING TOUR DATES

We've got a talk/performance at Boulder's first TEDx conference, a let's-try-this-again-this-time-without-the-ash-cloud jaunt to the UK and Germany, a fond farewell series of shows on the East Coast, a fond hello to my new home in the Midwest, and a last Labor-Day hurrah from a festival stage in Seattle. I'm living up the touring life right up to the first day of class, folks. It's going to be a hard habit to kick. (Fortunately, I'll still get to play now and again while I'm a grad student—ssee below for confirmed fall and 2011 dates.)

When I saw her in Omaha last November, she performed in a small venue and I counted about 50 people in attendance. As you posted above, she is schedule in 2011 to be at the Holland Performing Arts Center. The room she will be in holds about 300 people. Quite a difference from last time. Here is what the 1200 CLUB is:

Quote
The 1200 CLUB transforms the Holland Performing Arts Center's most intimate venue, the Suzanne and Walter Scott Recital Hall, into a relaxed lounge where patrons can experience performances by national and internationally known artists in folk, jazz, blues, world music and comedy. While enjoying the evening's entertainment, audience members may order hors d'oeuvres and cocktails served right to their table.

Vienna at Come2Go Ministries Music Hall in Ft. Wayne tonight.  Awesome solo performance!  Thanks so much for the discovery.  I now own the whole collection  :thumb:

I saw Brandi at a small club in Northern, VA probably 5 years or so back.  It's so nice to see great talent in such a setting.  Another one to watch is www.eilenjewell.com.  She may be in her last round of small club shows.  I saw her twice and will be catching a show towards the latter part of January.  Her lead guitarist alone is incredible, Mr. Jerry Miller.  He was with Moby Grape in the late 60s, listed among the top 100 rock guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone and Eric Clapton has been quoted as saying he is the best ever.

TomS

This little hall is pretty amazing.  Ellery opened for her.  Jake Shimabukuro and Shawn Phillips were also also there recently.  Though it was originally a warehouse, it seems to have had full effort at sound treatments in the ceiling everywhere resulting in very good sound to go with the performance.  I'd guess it's suitable for maybe 100-150 max.  No smoke, no alcohol, young folks welcome so nice crowd mix.  Looking forward to see what else comes there.

Vienna is going to U of M in Ann Arbor now so maybe she'll do more Midwest shows over the next couple of years.

I wonder if anyone has asked her about HiRez music download sales?  Would love to hear the tracks at 24bit resolution!

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to speak with her last night as there was a fairly big CD/autograph line.  The redbook cuts from CD I've listened to so far this morning are very good, but I definitely prefer the live stuff.

Danny Richie

She has a DVD of one of her performances that is REALLY good and has very good sound quality.

All of her CD's sound okay, but it is the first one (Waking Hour) that has by far the best sound quality. I still use a few of those tracks for speaker evaluation.

New update:

Hello from finals week! There's snow on the streets of Ann Arbor, and this California girl is relishing the naïve delight while it lasts.  I'm soon off write one last paper, and I'm a little loopy from yesterday's 10-hour stint in the lab, so pardon the haste. But I've got an exciting update for you:

WARM STRANGERS SONGBOOK IS OUT!

Ships DECEMBER 20, hopefully in the nick of time for gift-giving:

David Beattie has produced another masterpiece of meticulousness. Seriously...his emails of editing notes are pages and pages long. He's pored over the most minute details of my piano-playing (much to my chagrin), and produced transcriptions that are somehow both faithful to the recordings and a lot more structured than my sometimes rambling arrangements. He's included backing vocals and some of the lovely melodic lines on trumpet, cello and English horn, too.

Huge props to David, manager/wrangler Amy Cox, and Port Merchandise honcho Chip Taylor for bringing this together.

The Waking Hour songbook is still available too, of course:

ONLINE Q&A CONCLUDED...FOR NOW

Thanks everyone for your questions on the online Q&A last month—”a great collection of silly, thoughtful, sharp, revealing inquiries that made me happy all over again to have the audience that I do. No promises, but I might try to tackle a few more over the holidays. (There's a 250+ question backlog now, holy moly.)

In the meantime you can check out the completed ones here:

A sample for the curious:

"What are some errors/mistakes one should avoid making when songwriting?"
Hmmm...it really depends on the songwriter. (How's that for a cop-out?) I'll tell you one mistake that I make all the time: getting paralyzed by believing that everything you come up with has to be amazing. It doesn't. You have to put in the hours. Writing crap leads to writing better crap leads to writing stuff with glimmers of promise and maybe the occasional stroke of genius. And then you find yourself writing crap again the next day.
