Last night I saw one of the best live performances that I have ever seen.

Great call, Danny. I saw Vienna Teng last night at the Aladdin in Portland, and she really is good. I was expecting great song writing, singing and playing, but what I did not expect was the stage personality that she has. In between each song she talks to the audience and was really humorous and entertaining. She really is the complete package.

Hopefully later this year I will be investing in some OB speakers which will do more justice to her songs.

Dave.

Thanks for the heads-up. Had never heard of Vienna Tang until I saw this thread. Picked up an album via emusic. Great stuff. Now I need to buy the CD though so I can hear her in full rez.

Hugh and I went to the concert at the Roxy. It was an enjoyable time, and the warm up bands were also very talented. She is talented, beautiful, and intelligent. Nice combination. :)

Danny Richie

Where did you guys see her?

You don't know where the Roxy Theater is? ;) :)

It's an old club in Hollywood, CA, where most of the up and coming or just started out talents honed their horns at.

Too bad, they didn't serve coffee.
I wish she played at Art's brother's place. :D

Where did you guys see her?

Wow!  What a talent.  And that's the way I'd like to see her.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier ....it was a fun show
& a pleasant surprise to run into Danny & his wife at the show.

So Danny did you guys drive home last nite?

Fun Show....so-so venue....lotsa character :P

Danny Richie

Hey Carl,

We came prepared to spend the night in OKC, but I was wide awake and decided to drive on in.

The Blue Door was a dive. I can't believe so many people have been there to perform. I can't believe that Vienna and Alex would be willing to play there either. I am guessing that there were about 70 people there.

The show was great. You can really tell that they have been on the road a lot. The songs were well practiced. Vienna nails the vocals at each show just like on the CD. She belts it out without missing a note and with just as much feeling and emotion each and every time.

At the end of the show I was visiting with Alex about how they needed to come to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest in October when my wife got our attention and snapped this shot.

I figured, hey, if they are willing to do small venues for 70 to 100 people why not do a show that draws 2,500? I could easily see her doing two songs sets, selling CD's, and meeting fans in the lobby on that grand piano. Plus an evening show for paying customers over in one of the ball rooms...

Hey Marjorie?

I also have to mention just how good Alex was as well. In the Harbor song he was catching the low notes with his heal against the box, playing the drums, cymbal, and at the same time covering the led on the bells without missing a beat.

They brought in another guy (Ward) that played a Cello, electric guitar and stuff. He was also really good.

Alex also told me that in the new album Vienna was indeed playing a grand piano. I would have swore it was a keyboard. It certainly sounds fairly well compressed or something. It just doesn't have the same realism as the piano played in the first album Waking Hour. Is anyone else bugged with the sound of that piano on the new album.

Oh yea, and the first cut of the new album, The Last Snowfall, sounded great live. I didn't miss the cracks and pops that they added on the CD to give it that vintage vinyl sound at all.

Again a great show. If any of you guys reading this are in the area's of the up and coming shows then don't miss it. name this morning.

Danny Richie

I just received a new e-mail from Vienna with some new updates. See below:

Summer greetings!

I write to you from a tiny apartment in East Village. The bathroom is in the kitchen; a clothesline hung on the bedroom wall is the closet. Manhattanites clearly use the city itself for most of their living space.

This isn't my new home, merely home of the week, as I've become a genuine nomad this year. Read on to find out why...

CD RELEASE TOUR - THANK YOU

A huge THANK YOU for making these past few months a tremendously successful CD release tour! All throughout Europe and the U.S. we were amazed by the turnout at the shows--given the global recession and the fact that we'd taken a chance on playing larger venues, we weren't expecting the sold-out dates and packed houses that we played to night after night.

Not only did we get to see you, you brought your roommates, old friends visiting from halfway across the world, your metalhead boyfriends and punk-rock girlfriends, business partners, life partners, your parents with Joni Mitchell records and your kids just starting piano lessons. You filled up beautiful old theaters, legendary jazz clubs and the occasional converted barn (here's looking at you, northern Virginia and Oklahoma City). We don't take your support lightly. It means the world to us. Thank you.

Much gratitude to Alex Wong and Ward Williams, Ben Sollee, Amber Rubarth and Adam Christgau of The Paper Raincoat, Katie Herzig and Jordan Hamlin and Claire Indie, and tour manager/sound engineers Gert Rickmann-Wunderlich and Tom Dube, for being fantastic musicians and even better travel companions. They are rare creatures. I'm glad to know them.

UPCOMING SHOWS

I'll be playing solo throughout the summer, beginning in New York this Friday, June 19 at Housing Works. This great organization runs thrift stores and a bookstore-cafe to fund its HIV/AIDS support and housing programs, and all proceeds from the evening will benefit Housing Works.

http://www.housingworks.org/events/detail/live-from-home-with-vienna-teng1/

Then it's off to Largo on June 22, the renowned listening room in L.A. To be honest, I'm a bit intimidated to be playing a venue where people like Aimee Mann, Gillian Welch and Fiona Apple like to hang out. Come out, Angelenos, and tell me it's gonna be OK...

http://www.largo-la.com/largohome.html

I'll probably be more relaxed by June 29 at Hotel Cafe. I'll probably have recruited some guest appearances from various talented L.A. friends as well.

http://www.hotelcafe.com/calendar.html

July and August bring dates with excellent songwriter friends like Katie Herzig and Ari Hest, plus a special concert August 14 at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, featuring songs from musical-in-progress Sid Arthur.

http://www.theatreworks.org/about/newworks/festivalevents.aspx

And when does the trio play again, you ask? I reunite with the fabulous Alex Wong and Ward Williams in Westhampton Beach on July 17, and at New York's Highline Ballroom on August 20!

REVIEWS OF INLAND TERRITORY

It may be "like dancing about architecture," as the saying goes, but we're happy to see music writers getting excited (and eloquent) about the album we worked so hard to create. Here are a few if you're interested:

Blurt Online (formerly Harp Magazine)
"there's no denying the sheer effervescent beauty she's capable of welding so flawlessly, an ability that allows Inland Territory to demand repeated exploration"
http://www.blurt-online.com/reviews/view/996/

American Songwriter
"lush strings, doleful horns, plaintive woodwinds and sweeping choral arrangements pad the brilliant, introspective diary of an album"
http://www.americansongwriter.com/2009/05/vienna-teng-inland-territory/

Slant Magazine
"an adventurous sonic palette and songs that draw inspiration from both personal and topical sources...stands as her most satisfying and mature album to date"
http://www.slantmagazine.com/music/music_review.asp?ID=1707

Performing Songwriter
"flush with songs too clever for radio--four-minute tales of love, war, reincarnation and the plight of illegal immigrants. 'Antebellum'...is a genuine Broadway-worthy showstopper"
http://viennateng.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=20414&highlight=#20414

Stereo Subversion
"This isn't music for passive listening...For those seeking meaning in music, [Inland Territory] should not be missed by any means"

MEDIA APPEARANCES

Back in December a nice camera crew from KQED's Spark followed me around for two days. If you ever wanted to see me hang out with my brother, rehearse with the quartet or talk about my (lack of) fashion sense, now's your chance.
http://www.kqed.org/arts/programs/spark/profile.jsp?essid=24226

NPR's All Songs Considered featured "The Last Snowfall" back in April. Along with Jack White and Radiohead, at that. Wow.

On the live-for-broadcast side of things, Alex and I recently got to perform on these great radio shows:

WNYC Soundcheck

E-Town (airs June 24-30)

You can still check out our Mountain Stage appearance from last year too:

It's been an amazing year, and it's only half over! We look forward to sharing Inland Territory with ever-wider audiences in the coming months.

Thanks for reading, for listening, and for being here.

Much love,
VT

New e-mail update from Vienna:

Vienna and Alex here.

We like making music together. If you've seen us playing on tour, or listened to _Inland Territory_, you can probably tell.

Because you've been asking for a long time, because you've said such nice things about our duo shows, because for some wonderful reason you still want to BUY recordings of these performances even though you can probably find them for free on the Internet somewhere...

We're making a live album. And we want you to be part of it.

Danny, you've recommended her so much, I'll have to try to attend her performance here in Austin at Stubb's on November 11. :)

Danny Richie

Yes, she puts on a great show. If she is in your area then don't miss it. They are small venue shows and ticket prices are usually pretty low too so no reason not to go.

Danny Richie

Just a reminder to you guys in my area. Vienna will be in Dallas on the 14th of this month.

jimdgoulding

She's in Houston on the 13th at a spa or something . . NiaMoves?  I'm calling them to get the skinny.

I plan to hear her on November 17 in Omaha. Thanks for recommending this performance.

srclose

Heading to Hesston, KS on the 21st.

jimdgoulding

Buyin tickets today.  NiaMoves (Houston in the Heights) hosted James McMurtry awhile back.  It's an uptown yoga center with a listening room.  Dang . . I didn't even know about the place!  Also, we gotta club of folkies down here called the Songbird Sanctuary that meets in the organizer's registered home in the Montrose section of town.  Saw Ruthie Foster there with my daughter.  Members bring food and wine.  Seats around 70.  Looking forward to Vienna Teng.  Thanks, D.

After RMAF  I saw here in Saratoga Calif....where she graduated from H.S.
I graduated from there many, many, many years earlier.
She played at the Carriage house ...nice venue.
I will try & see here again in OKC at our "dump' of a venue The Blue Door.
I wish she would try to get into a different venue.
Danny can elaborate on this 'quality' venue....he & I both attended her concert there.

Danny Richie

Yeah, the Blue Door leaves a lot to be desired. Sure was a good show though.
