Exotic engine sounds - my favorite music of all

Just wondering who here besides me is a total engine sound junkie? There is nothing that will stand the hairs on the back of my neck up like the sound of an exotic motor being put through its paces. What are your top 5 favorite engine sounds? Here is my list among the cars I have heard in person

1) Porsche Carrera GT (straight pipes)
2) Porsche 935 race car (flat fan motor)
3) Ferrari 333SP race car
4) Ferrari 550 Marenello (with Tubi exhaust)
5) BMW E39 M5 (with Tubi exhaust)

Nothing moves the earth like a top fuel dragster or funny car though.

One of those crotch rockets with after market pipes being shifted through the gears winding each one all the way out is really good too. (that used to be me

Years ago, I got into a F1 computer racing game that was very realistic with the force feedback steering wheel and all. The game was very flexible in that it allowed a lot of customization including adding sound files to make your car of choice sound like you wanted.

Anyway, while looking for good sound files for my Ferrari (the game simulated the entire 1967 F1 racing season), I ran across a d/l that someone said was very realistic in recording a F1 Ferrari at a race.

I'm pretty sure it was an MP3 file and after D/Ling it and playing it on my rather crappy PC speakers and really loving it, I got the idea and talked a friend of mine more adept at this to convert it and burn it to a regular CD so I could play it on my modest at the time audio system.

Whoever did the recording knew what they were doing. You get a definite stereo effect of the car passing from one speaker to the other (your head wants to turn following the car). Twice during the recording the car comes into the pits, once seemingly to change tires as you also hear the air wrench being blipped and the other stop maybe to get gas. On this stop, the driver is blipping the throttle like crazy to keep it from stalling I guess.

But oh baby, the real thrill is hearing those probably V-12 F1 engines at full song go by. The drivers are seemingly trying to break them, no mercy. It's as beautiful a sound as you'll ever hear. There are times that the damn things sound like jet fighters rather than car engines.

And then after that beautiful sound at full throttle, the driver starts down-shifting for maybe a hairpin curve, and then the engine sounds like your Chevy on the street with no mufflers.

All in all, quite a treat. I never get tired of loading it up occasionally, sitting back and enjoying a F1 race for 3 or 4 minutes.

What about a true audiophile recording?
The Youtube things are nice, but............ I'd rather have something I could play through the Squeezebox and the entire audio system.
The youtube and PC speakers just make me "want for more, you know?

When it comes to recording engines, I think we have to live with the clips we have - hard to truly capture the experience of a well tuned motor.

LOVED that 1.6 V16 clip!

I too love, and miss, the sound of a tuned inline 4 motorcycle run idle to redline through 6 gears, through a nice pipe (Hindle for you Canadians out there, or perhaps Two Brother's or Akropovich for the purists!). Miss it badly!

In 1964 I had a 12' vinyl record called The Sound(s?) of Speed. It had a huge variety of racing engine sounds - old Aston Martins, Ferraris, Mercedes, early Yamaha 2 stroke racing motorcycles, all under race conditions, with the recordings taken from effective locations like the approach to a hairpin where the driver had to go down and up through all the gears.

My favorite sound by far on this disc was the recording of Mickey Thompson's Challenger I breaking the world landspeed record at 406 mph in 1960. It is the sound of 4-supercharged 700hp Pontiac engines flat out, coupled with a massive amount of doppler effect. It was recorded at a distance of at least 2 miles, if I recall. Real music!
Unfortunately I left disc at a party and I never saw it again, and I can't seem to find any recordings of this on the internet, although I did find this reference to the Challenger speed runs: http://www.thompson-motorsports.com/chall2.html

Oooooh, nice call on the Yamaha 2 strokes.

I have an RZ350 (later, liquid cooled cousin of the RD) on my desk at work - blew that motor up good...

LOVE 2 strokes, there is just something magical about the stink - my snowblower, and grass trimmer are both 2 stroke - they remind me of the good old days with the RZ, and my days sledding with 2 stroke Polaris 600 triples!

Thanks, Bob, but that's not it!

There was no music on the one I'm talking about, just a serious attempt to cram as much interesting motor sound as possible onto a 12" record. Many tracks, all carefully documented - there may even have been a spoken commentary.
Also, it was in stereo and this one is simulated stereo.
A google search turned up nothing in the way of recordings - lots on Mickey Thompson, though.

I have put out a query to Road & Track magazine.
