Neoprene-cork feet
« on: 22 Feb 2009, 04:11 am »

I've read abit about neoprene/cork pads as feet for components. Some are advertised at $24 for 4.     I found these for $1.50 per foot at http://www.soundproofing.org/infopages/vibrationpads.htm.  They work great under my Music Reference RM200.  I'm going to try some under other components, too.  Thought you might like to know.   :)

I have them under my preamp and tubed squeezebox and they work just dandy, especially at $6/set. :)

Also worth trying at a similar price point are the "unhappy balls" from Arbor Scientific, which are made of polynorbornene.   Polynorbornene has an even lower coefficient of restitution (better damping) than Sorbothane.

(Note that you'll have to call Arbor to place an order for just the polynorbornene balls... they usually pair them with "happy balls".)

I'd be curious to try the cork/neoprene pads at some point, but doubt I could hear the difference in my current Frankenstein rig.  Mike, I have some halved polynorbornene balls you can borrow if you like.  I'm sure your rig(s) could resolve any differences.

I have to vote with Mike in favor of the cork/neoprene pads,I am using them under my Rev III preamp and I have used them to good effect under a Tripath based power amp.

I use these cork/rubber squares in conjunction with a maple platform and brass cones for my BPT balanced power conditioner as shown in this picture from Mapleshade Records.

Cheers,

Brian, we can swap, I bought quite a few of the neoprene/cork pads. I've ready about the unhappy balls and have wanted to try them.

I have been using the "unhappy balls" for several years.  I cut them in half (cut along the mold line) and place them flat side down on standard black hockey pucks.  They are a very good DIYer isolation item.  Another great isolation DIYer is one that I just started to use.  It consist of the use of 2.25" diameter gel stress ball (LINK) used inside a 3" diameter X 1.5" H cherry stained fruitwood condiment bowl.  The gel balls were given to me free and the bowls cost $5.00 for a set of four at TJMaxx.  I also use a zip-lock bag filled with a mixture of a couple lbs. of lead shot and sand on top of the unit to add some mass loading.   :thumb:

I started using the cork/rubber squares too.
I just purchased at a different place, they work very well ($12 a set).
This is on an all glass shelf rack setup. TT is on 50lbs Granite.
Granite on stacked on doubled cork/rubber squares and all is well.

If you visit your local HVAC supplier, you can usually find the same Neo/Cork feet for a buck a piece. I know Mapleshade uses exactly the same foot, sticks two together, then trims it so the sides are evened up.....and of course sells it as an 'Isoblock' for MUCH more. They do work well in a pinch, but by FAR the best solution is to go inner tube/MDF/roller bearing....that way you satisfy vertical as well as horizontal vibration issues.

Kenda makes inner tubes for $3ea.....Shephard makes wooden furniture cups P/N# 3697, get some steel/tungsten carbide 1/2" balls.....and you're set.

Believe me, you'll be astonished.

Stone Deaf,

Don't feel too bad, because the Herbie's and Mapleshade products work as advertised.  At least you didn't waste your money on stuff that doesn't work.  :?
