Sonny,

Did you have the GTG?  Any thoughts on the ring/clamp?

Shaun

GTG?  sorry to ask Shaun, but what are you referring to with GTG?

Well, I've heard the ring clamp and I think it makes a HUGE difference.  But on my current platter, I can't use it and being unemployed, I can't afford it either!   :icon_lol: aa

Sonny,

My bad, I thought you and John (Chairguy) were going to get together and do some listening using the ring/clamp.  I must have missunderstood.

Sonny,

I did add a Dodd pre, and am waiting for the phono pre from Gary.  I love what I am hearing/not hearing from the  pre... :thumb:

I have one made specifically for the VPI HW-19 Mk. III platter....I don't think the folks are in business anymore.
John

Uhh, it's in my box, right? :icon_twisted:

Nope, that came from another place other than VPI....some guys in TN that are now outta' business (Sound Engineering LLP)

I paid more for it than some enterprising guy on ebay is now offering really nice brass ones (tho I don't see it today, so he may be selling 'em faster than he makes them...I think he was charging $300 for them and they looked brilliant)

Mine is dull finished metal and cost more like $500.00.  I'm hanging on to it to see if it will fit the new VPI Classic (I'm not certain it will, tho, based on convo's with VPI)

The periphery ring that VPI offers is like $600, but does not fit the HW-19 Mk. III's I believe.

Most people that make the rings approach the problem from the wrong angle. They try to make some very heavy ring that fits over the outer edge of the record and the shear weight of the ring presses it flat.

Well that process of manufacturing is expensive and wasteful. That is why most clamps are very expensive, regardless of material used.

Another way to fix a warped record is to spring load the edge with some very stiff banding with a positioning groove. That could be made out of some formed stainless steel (thin gauge) with a groove formed in the center, then rolled into a ring so it looks like a hoop. You would then "snap" the ring around the edge of the record and probably have something like a small hook or spring hold the ring snug to the record. The result is a controlled record surface (which is the whole object of the ring), at a much more affordable cost. It could also be made out of spring steel.
