Occasional LP like pops with the BCD-1
« on: 14 Feb 2009, 07:28 pm »
Just curious if anyone has experienced any LP like pops while playing CDs on their BCD-1. The particular sound that randomly occurs, sounds quite like a stylus skirting over a piece of dust.
I’m not too sure if this is from the laser as it hesitates and skips over a smudge or piece of dust on the CD or some faulty component within the player itself, the problem is that it’s intermittent, only happens occasionally and not repeated if I replay the section, but it can be annoying at times.

Sounds like a gerbal problem :icon_lol:. No i bet u the problem lies somewhere else in your system. More likely in your preamp, dust in the volume control or something. Try moving your bcd-1 into a different connect, like aux or video. Play it for a while and see what happens. If it doesn't  happen than u know its the connect in the pre or receiver, hope this helps.

I thought it might be part of the programing to enhance the analogue appeal of the BCD-1  :violin:

Did it happen with previous player?Alot of players can make different sounds when trying to play a disc.

No, it only surfaced with the BCD-1. Thought I'd asked around just to see if the pop or as I mentioned more like a  static pop is indeed the BCD-1's sound when encountering an error on the disc.

Hi Rob,

It sounds like a dry static issue - have you ever lost signal completely or has the BCD-1 ever froze?

Hi James

Actually, it  does sounds like dry static discharge, low but audible, I usually have a humidifier running during the winter though.
The BCD-1 has froze on occasion but only when fast forwarding a track near the end of the disc, I've mentioned this before on another thread.

Bear in mind though, the pop happens  only once in a blue moon between discs and maybe at most 2-3 times on a disc if it does occur.

Hi Rob, I experienced sounds like that in the past, but not on the BCD-1.
IMO this was because of bad conversion software. Like converting mp3 to wave or another format to wave. The pops would occur randomly on discs. When I change to a better software converter the problem went away. Another thing that caused occasional glitch was cheap cd-rs. Also if I play a cd that was copied from a copy protected disc, I usually get static on the last track. Some cd's can't be copied at all, but it's rare to encounter one of those. Some cd's can be copied but the sound is degraded from the original, but those are rare as well.

So I have to ask the question, do you know if these discs you played were converted?

Hi Mag,

No they are all original CD's.
