Does anyone know if it is legit to copy a CD/LP that is out of print and no longer available for purchase? I bought this CD of a local artist that is really good. The CD was put out in very small quantity privately and since has never been reissued. Can I copy it and to give to friends legitimately?
FWIW, the artist is a taper friendly artist who also encouraged mp3 distribution of his works (knowing people who became fans would buy his works). I have a couple of his CDs and would like to know if I can copy them for members.

Josh, while I'm not a copyright layer, or even close I don't think you'd have a problem doing what you're describing.
You're not charging for the copies, and that's what people get in trouble for.

Ah, no, that's not legal. But you could ask him for permission...
