Program To Rip in FLAC and MP3 Simultaneously
« on: 2 Feb 2009, 02:53 am »
I spoke with the guys at Sooloos about their software for ripping.  He stated that they us EAC to rip into FLAC but I didn't ask about MP3's.  The thing about the Sooloos is that the device also creates an MP3 of the disc.  So you will have the option of both with only one rip. I wonder if their is a setting in EAC or any program for that matter that will do this automatically?  Or, is this a special function of their particular software? For obvious reasons (cost) I do not want to go with the Sooloos but I think this is a neat feature.

Thanks,

James

Foobar will convert FLAC -> MP3 pretty easily.  I actually converted my entire collection over to MP3 for work.  It was pretty painless, and I was able to have it copy the folder structure I already had.

My questions is whether one of these programs will do it simultaneously as the Sooloos does?  I am aware that it is possible to be done with additional processing steps.

There is an add-on for EAC called React that will allow you to do FLAC and MP3.

I've been using this for a few years now and produce FLAC and MP3 in one pass.

dBpoweramp will do simultaneous multiple decodes with different settings for each one, e.g. naming conventions, storage locations, etc.

There are programs, such as React, that you can use with EAC. IMO, it's much more convenient to just rip and encode in Flac, then convert/mirror your library at a later time in Mp3.  Mp3 encoding takes several times longer than Flac encoding, so it can really slow down the ripping process.

Is the purpose for MP3s for an iPod or similar device?

Have you looked at Media Monkey? You can have all of your music stored as FLAC, and then when you connect your portable device, it will convert the files for you to mp3s as you sync. If that's your situation, you only need to store/save one file format.

With that said... I make two copies myself for a variety of reasons - just throwing it out there in case it proves helpful.

And I'll second foobar - it's fantastic for converting. I just need to spend some time to fix the UI.
