Delta Sigma processing in DACs.....
« on: 21 Jan 2009, 06:52 pm »
Why is DS included in some newer DAC chips?  Does DS help the DAC remove jitter?  Noise?  A criticism seems to be that DACs with DS lose a bit of detail - any thoughts?

Thx,
Ed

The Creek i have has a Crystal chip with quite low jitter

My Musical Fidelity DAC has DS as well,  I'm curious why DS branched from SACD to CD/DACs.

for me and lack of better vocab, i'd say its a bit more analog sounding, there is also no lack of detail.

BTW - I'm not claiming DS DACs lack detail.  It's just a claim I've read a place or two.

I like my DS Musical Fidelity X-DAC V8 a lot.

Excellent link thank you.

I'd still like to get a better feel for why DS DACs are used.  More of a why these DACs do/don't do versus other topologies.

DS is FAR cheaper to make, thus DS DACs are virtually all that is available anymore.  MultiBit DACs are said to have better low level linearity, whatever that means in terms of total performance.

Ahh.  The price angle makes sense.
