Got my New Insight Pat-5 Today....
« on: 10 Dec 2008, 04:12 am »
Hooked it up to my Insight 240 amp and to get a quick listen I hooked it up to a pair of Dynaco A25 speakers. Man I never thought that those little speakers could sound that good. Still got a couple more 12 hour days before I am off and then I will hook it up to the big dogs. It's just gonna get better. Waiting on the final piece my Insight DAC. LIFES GREAT Bill

Congrats, Bill!  :thumb:

As Father Guido Sarducci used to allude; those twelve hour days are going to fly by. Unless, of course, they don't.

Have fun,
Jerry

Life is great, Bill.  Life isn't always easy, but I have a lot for which to be thankful, including my Insight trio. After I read your post, I started thinking about a lot of things, including the joy, or in difficult times, the comfort that music brings to me.  AVA owners are a happy group.  We obtain a lot of pleasure from our equipment and our music.  I cannot think of too many other forums where users are this enthusiastic about a product (the Salk owners are happy, too, but believe me, it is not like this on the Jaguar automobile forums  ).

As far as "the final piece," we'll see.

For myself, I am content, and I don't plan to purchase any other products unless Frank comes out with a CD transport or I have an opportunity to audition the Ultra gear (although earlier tonight, I ordered two more acoustic panels for my ceiling, and there is that LP cleaning machine that I probably could use).

Glad that you are enjoying your AVA gear.

LIFE'S GREAT Bill

This is what I think a lot of people don't get.  Being an audiophile (and the use of that word almost makes me shutter--due to the audioflake culture) is often more about the music.  It's about the experience, and sharing the experience with others.

The experiences that I share with my children (3 year old and a 6 month old kids)...many of which surround music...is what makes life worth living.  The system (complete w/ Frank's gear) is what draws us there, but the quality time spent while we are there is what I really cherish.  Dancing my baby to sleep while listening to her favorite songs in front of the fire--that's what my life's about.

Of course--I am raising two audio-snobs though...which may come back to bite me.  (Who wants to bet that they're going to ask for Frank's control amp for their rooms!)

I will bet that if you raise them correctly, they will expect separate components.

I think that a lot of the satisfaction for the forum members is having each others' support, but I assume that the forum compromises a miniscule percentage of AVA owners.  AVA gear is a music lover's product, and the fact that AVA equipment rarely (I assume, in relation to overall units sold and the products' long life spans) appears for sale but commands a respectable price when it does appear, is also indicative of customer satisfaction.

I think you'll be amazed at the difference that the Insight preamp makes, and then further amazed at what the Insight DAC adds to it.

In my case, moving from OmegaStar gear to the Insight preamp, I was stunned at the added layers of detail. It also removed the last vestiges of SS sound. (The OS sounded a bit harsh at times, but the Insight preamp does not.)

Then I added an Insight DAC. I didn't really hear any more detail, but things got more solid somehow. It's also as if I got bigger woofers, because the bass is much more solid. The one thing I used to wish about my speakers is that they would move more air. In fact, I was thinking about building a pair of Earl Geddes's speakers with that in mind. After getting the Insight DAC, I'm rethinking my need to get different speakers.

Congrats on your PAT-5. I just received my Insight PAT-5 rebuild yesterday. I have the Insight PAT-5 connected to my Insight 240. I was a we bit skeptical of Frank's claims of making lesser componts sound great. So far he is right and I really love this setup. I ran some analogue through it last night, vinyl and FM radio. It sounded fantastic. The FM sounded as if live in the studio. Good luck and enjoy.

(An added benefit of the PAT-5 retrofit is the spouse has no clue it is a diamond in the rough -an excellent way to sneek in new equipment un-noticed!)

The one thing I used to wish about my speakers is that they would move more air. In fact, I was thinking about building a pair of Earl Geddes's speakers with that in mind. After getting the Insight DAC, I'm rethinking my need to get different speakers.

My situation was just the opposite regarding speakers.  I own three pairs of LS3/5A-type mini monitors, lastly using, of the three pairs, Spendor S3/5 as my primary speakers.  I thought that they were great speakers, but after I received my Insight gear, it became apparent that the speakers couldn't keep up with the electronics, and not just in terms of bass response.  For lack of a better term, the speakers seemed to be confused, particularly on passages where there was a lot of material.

After a while, I decided that I needed "better" speakers to appreciate the AVA gear.  Like Frank stated about the Salk HT-3,  "They let you hear everything that is happening ahead of them, from the talent of the performer, the mics, the record electronics, down to the whole playback system, for better or for worse (usually for the better, a lot better, with good stuff ahead of them).  My HT3s are tools, my acoustic windows into the quality of our design ideas.  We need to hear it all, and the HT3s let us know, right away, if our ideas are worthwhile."

Well, my Spendor S3/5 were pleasant sounding, but they weren't windows into the music, or if they were, they were tinted and well-shaded windows, and that's not what this is about, IMO, and I purchased a pair of Salk SongTower with ribbon tweeters.  Even if I am not hearing everything, I am a lot closer, and I am hearing a whole lot more than I was hearing before, and I got some bass, too.

You need to work on getting your spouse on board. Perhaps if you pointed out that stereo's have a "sweet spot" and that means extended periods of sitting really close together?

My wife likes listening to music with me. She is perhaps not quite as appreciative of new or upgraded equipment as I am, but she still likes this hobby because I involve her in it. I try to make it "our" hobby, and not just "my" hobby.

I have always felt that LS3/5As were very colored. Perhaps they were good 30 years ago when used in the near field for mobile recording, but I've never liked the way they sound in a home stereo system.

I haven't heard the SongTowers, but I did get a chance to listen to the HT3s. They were quite clean and neutral. Jim's speakers are one of the very few I would consider purchasing.

Sorry, I meant to write LS3/5A-type mini monitors, and I edited my post.  The other speakers that I own are KEF 101 Reference Series, Spendor S3/5, and Linn Tukan, and they are substantially similar to the LS3/5A, IMO, but my apology to any LS3/5A owners who think that the LS3/5A is vastly superior.   :D

Between 4 bass traps (4" thick) and 14 acoustic panels (2" thick), there will be approximately 140 square feet of acoustic treatments (after I receive two more panels for the ceiling) in an approximately 200 square foot room.  The room is sufficiently dead, I believe.  The difference with the acoustic treatments is incredible.

I purchased the bass traps and acoustic panels from acoustimac.com.  The owner, Sal, seems very knowledgeable, and he is an avid audio person.  He told me that he has had over 40 different speakers and over 30 different electronic components in his listening room over the past few years (I guess he hasn't found AVA, or he wouldn't have needed to change the electronics that often; just kidding, Sal, well maybe :)).  And like Frank, he didn't try to sell me things that he didn't think would work for me. The bass traps and acoustic panels cost approximately $900.00 (lesser quality panels can be found for a slightly less at other manufacturers; acoustimac uses OC 703 for the acoustic panels and suede-like zippered covers for their premium line or another nice fabric for their lower cost line), and IMO, are a bargain when weighing the price v. performance.
