I had a reviewer here and played the Waters disc mentioned in the post above where the dog is barking on the far right side of the soundstage and the soldier is telling his story on the left side of the soundstage.  With the Quad 2905's the bark is over your right shoulder and the soldier starts off in the left speaker and gradually moves up the left wall till he is about 20 degrees off your left shoulder.

The reviewer could not believe it - two channel surround sound

Those Quads are probably dipolar, which could explain the difference. I know that with omnipolars you can get some sounds walking on the ceiling above you. Front-firings are pretty consistent in the effect (when properly placed). I didn't experience any 3D effect when listening with headphones. Which made me draw the conclusion that it works through room reflections.

Here's another recording from my audition tool-set. Very well engineered, absolutely clean sound, pretty perfect. The first track, apart from being an auditive delight, will also let you know how deep in the low frequencies your system is going. Just make sure you don't play it very loud in a boomy room, if you get stationary waves it could be nauseating.

Track 5 "Chiquilin de Bachin". Piano, double-bass and drums. ECM records. Do I need to say more?

The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute

There are still some bands out there that push the envelope and record the music they want to play. No over-produced "cookie cutter" music here.

Wow, thanks for that one.  Hadn't heard of them before, and the local shops don't carry the CD's.  Did manage to find an LP of what must be their first album, and it included a CD as well.

Which genre of music is that?

Finnish metal with a zest of folk.  :duh:

You don't really want to listen to it.

Just rediscovered something that's been lying dormant in my CD collection:

The Screaming Blue Messiahs - "Gun Shy" (Elektra 9 60488-2)

This is quite astounding British rock from the 80's.   To me, these guys sound like The Talking Heads on steroids.  The sonics are okay, but the music just grabs you and doesn't let go.

Happy listening.

Mhhhh which sub-genre.... there's a long way from let's say heavy metal to the symphonic gothic one...
