Interested in a Neo-1X with PE Boxes
« on: 21 Nov 2008, 03:45 pm »
Hello all,

I have eyed GR Research loudspeakers for some time now.  I had wanted a pre-built AV-1 a couple of years ago, but could not afford it.  I finally have the funds available, but I called Danny, and, as you know, he no longer builds them.  Thus, I am left with a dilemma in regard to obtaining a GR loudspeaker.  Danny kindly suggested the PE boxes, but I do not know if I have all of the woodworking equipment to build them correctly--though, I have done a bit of woodworking, albeit with very basic tools (inexpensive compound mitre saw, jig saw, drill).  I tend to be a perfectionist, too, and would want a nice product when completed...no "homemade" look.

After reviewing the newer available models, I would opt for a Neo-1X.  I have a medium sized room, and do not listen at high levels.  In regard to obtaining these loudspeakers, what should I do?  Should I buy the parts (and some power tools, I guess) and attempt a build, or should I ask an experienced builder here to assiste me or to build them completely?  A good router alone would go for about $250, right?  I welcome any advice or comments, as I would like to get this project moving forward.

Thanks,
Glen

If you're going the PE box route, it's just the baffles that need to be cut for the drivers.  Spending $250 on a router is quite extreme.  If  you have a Home Depot near by that rents tools, you might want to see what they have to offer.  Or, you could look into local woodworker shops that would either, 1) allow you to make the holes, or 2) perform the task for you - for a small fee.  Finally, you could check with a friend or neighbor if they have a router you can use.

There's no way I'd invest in a router - if it were just a single project, and I were never to use it again.  Additionally, if you do end up doing the work yourself, cut some rectangular baffles the same size at the PE boxes offer.  Then, practice with the router several times and making the appropriate "cuts" to ensure you're prepared when it comes to making the actual holes on the real baffle.

I thank you for the reply.  After reading KenShelton's "run down" of PE box preparation, I am a bit hesitant to try the build myself.  It seems there is a fair amount of skill involved, especially if one wants to do it right.

I've seen basic routers at Home Depot for $70-$100.  Although it may be easier to find a cabinet shop to make the holes for you.

It still should be fairly simple - with cutting the baffles.  What city are you close to?  Maybe, a member here can come to your aid.

Yikes!  That's where I live.  Western P.W. county.  I have a Ryobi router, too.

Wow, what a coincidence :)  I once lived in PW county (Woodbridge), and my wife is from PW county.  Would you be interested in getting together on this?  Have you built these (or similar models) before?  I can forward you my phone number, too.

Glen,

Sure, I'd be up to the task.  I have a 3' x 3' of MDF that could be used as material for the "test" baffles.  I currently don't have a jig for the cuts, but would purchase one because I know I'll need it.

As far as experience goes, I haven't done baffles.  However, I don't suspect it to be too complicated.  I've done lots of construction and fine woodworking (as a hobby and for $$).  My recent project was taking on the task of finishing 1,100 s.f. of my basement last year.  I passed all my inspections, so that should be a good sign.  :icon_surprised:
