Matching Speakers for 4B SST
« on: 17 Nov 2008, 10:17 pm »
Hi everyone!!

What of the following speakers match perfect (or very very well) using a 4B SST ?

1) Monitor Audio (Gold Signature Series) GS 20  or  GS 60
2) Energy Veritas 2.3 i
3) B&W 603 S3
4) B&W 703 or 705
5) Focal 800 Series.
6) Paradigm Reference Signature

Or.... :duh:...what speakers recommend me (in the same price range) for that lovely amp ??

Thanks.

Tosko:

I'm not sure about pricing but you might want to listen to the PMC TB1 or PMC FB1.
I'm not sure if they still make them, but the B&W 805 might work well.
Magnepans also sound good with the 4B (I'm not sure of the pricing).

Tosko,

If you already have the 4B SST I would recommend taking the amp to the dealer and testing the amp with the above speakers.  I use a Byrston 4B SST with a pair of VMPS RM40 speakers and I am very content with the sound.  Better yet, if the speakers are small (bookshelf) the dealer might let you audition them in home.

Good luck,

John

I use JBL Studio L890s...it's great combo, imo.

I'd say the 4BSST can drive all of those speakers you mentioned.

Thanks 4 your answer Jethro (Steve).
The point is that in my country (Argentina) does  :nono: not exist distributor/reseller of that excellent brand (PMC).
I´d listened the B&W 805´s but......it seems have not tight and controlled bass and don´t have a neutral sound (IMHO).
Thanks.

Tosko,

If you already have the 4B SST I would recommend taking the amp to the dealer and testing the amp with the above speakers.  I use a Bryston 4B SST with a pair of VMPS RM40 speakers and I am very content with the sound.  Better yet, if the speakers are small (bookshelf) the dealer might let you audition them in home.

Thanks for your answer John.
I don't have the 4B SST yet. But when I get it, I´ll take the amp to the dealer and I will spend much time listening the above speakers. I hope I´ll make a good choice.
Thanks again.

In my country (Argentina) does not exist distributor/reseller about Maggies. Only Martin Logan.

I´m using a Marantz SR 7300 receiver + Denon 2900 Universal player+ 603 S3 +LCR 60 S3
I like my B&W 603 S3. Thus I´m trying to buy a 4B SST, I´m looking for speakers that plays in the "same league of the 4B SST". James, we know that 603 S3 line is a entry level and 4B SST is a reference amp (at least in my budget)

I'm running a pair of small Dynaudio Contour's but it's hard to imagine the 4BSST not doing a stellar job with the majority of speakers, small or large.

I don't remember wich models I´d heard. It was in 2003 (5 years ago). But... I heard Northridge line (I did not like them). About the Studio Line  I´d  heard bookshelf (Studio 80 or something I don't remember) Good speaker but too bright to me.

Sorry I gave such a short kurt reply. What i meant that out of the speakers you mentioned none would be a good as the Maggie Bryston combo. Vandersteens are warm and transparent. The 2ce and 3a are fine speakers. good luck looking.

hi,Tosko!

what price range are these speakers you mentioned?
i assume that you are using the pre outs from your Marantz receiver, correct?
if so then don't forget the necessity of a matching preamp. another ac member just wrote that he bought a used BP20 to drive his Bryston amp and it really blew him away!

good luck and happy listening! :thumb:
