Cleaning Alps volume pot?
« on: 10 Nov 2008, 04:52 pm »
I moved recently, when I set my system back up I found that my preamps Alps volume pot sounds dirty. Its making a crunching sound when its turned. I tried some Rat Shack tuner cleaner but it didn’t work all that well.

I was told to use model train track cleaner fluid. But its hard to find without some sort of lubricant mixed in.

I need some advice as to how to clean this part and how do you get the fluid inside it? Its fairly well sealed.

Thanks!

Will the DeOxit work on a noisy selector switch also?

Thanks. I just ordered DeoxIT and DeoxIT GOLD (Pro Gold). Hope I can get the pot opened. Peter McALister said it was easy to clean myself so I assume it will be.

Sounds like you already ordered, but you can also get this at Radio Shack if you have one nearby.

DeOxit works great on pots and switches. On the Alps pot, if you look closely there are 2 small holes on the pot, with the small red spray adapter you get with the DeOxit, you can spray some in the.

Be sure to work the dial back and forth 10-12 times after spraying.

If you open up the chassis cover and look close you will see the holes.

Thanks, yeah I tried several Radio Shacks and none had it in stock. Thanks Benie, I'll look for that. I also got the pro gold product. I've used their stuff before, works great for tube sockets. Its a mild lubricant which is great for tube-rolling too.

Wait til you try cleaning those RCAs and speaker connections with Progold. Once a month will do.

My local rat shack only had a liquid ciag kit, not the aerosols. I ended up ordering the aerosols direct from caig.

Excellent stuff! I opened up my pre today, the Alps pot turned out to be a Blue Velvet which is not sealed. I opened up the unit, soaked the contacts then hit it with the ProGold. While I was at it I got all the switches and treated all the RCA’s, tube sockets  as well as the IEC and fuse.  I also cleaned and treated the tube pins. Unit is dead silent again.

I found a somewhat chalky residue on the inside of the pot that dissolved after a while. Not sure what it was or how/why it got there.

Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.
