Sounds good in theory. Unfortunately, the only person I know of that took the time to detail a comparison of both ended up preferring the Technics arm over an RB-250.

Well, it's a tie then for ya' now....as one other has posted his thoughts on the subject of the stock Technics versus the Rega arm: http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14453&highlight=

Jeff,

As I think you know....I have the full KAB motor and strobe disabler on my Technics Mk. II...along with an Origin Live Illustrious III arm (my stock arm was mashed, so no comparo was able).  That's $4000 of table, arm, armboard and motor mods (new prices)

I shifted out feet for brass toes and a maple block (very helpful) and the stock mat, too.  I played the deck for months...and came to the conclusion that my (ebay purchased $100...+ $40 of plasticlay) JVC DD table sounds better, as does the fully set-up VPI HW-19 Mk. III/AQ PT-6 now.

I'm completely agnostic on drive mechanisms and even features or build specs....I focus only on which table plays better.

The Technics sounds kinda' dark and dead to me...something that has been said about the unit by others in passing.  It's definitely fine and certainly well made, but it lacks that last vestige of something standing in it's way.

Dave Cawley of Sound HiFi in the UK believes it's the stock regulator - which is left in the KAB mods.  His mods eliminate and update it with a much beefier power supply.  http://www.soundhifi.com/sl1200/index.htm

Lotsa' neat stuff on his page...I know him only in reading, but a comparison to his modded version a Technics SL-1200 might be highly illuminating to you and your readers.

Regards, John

Anyone have a source for sorbothane feet for the SL-12xx TT like the Feet #1 at the soundhifi site?

Seems like a nice low cost tweak...we like those. What are you using JEFF?

These look similar:

I haven't ever dealt with Bright Star, but they have been around for a while, so probably a safe bet.

Peace,

I've used these and I don't think they are made out of sorbothane. What I do know is they'll mar your rack! They did a number on my Sanus wood shelves. :o That was before I went to Audiopoints under all my gear. Little pinhiles aren't quite so noticable.

Oh yeah...Sorbothane and a lot of the other low durometer viscoelastic materials are notorious for easting the finish off of wood--I have shelves all over the house to prove it.   :duh:

I got some sorbothane footers from a friend that makes that kind of stuff.
Honestly I think it makes an already dark table even more dark.

I'm really hoping the tonearm rewire and a proper tonearm cable brings this
thing out of the dark and in to the light....

We tried a few vintage cartridges tonight with interesting results.

Thanks for the link. I might be tempted to give it a shot in the not-too-distant future.

Hmm, that's odd. I've never heard of it getting darker with sorbothane footers. Always the opposite. Doesn't sorbothane come in different densities? Maybe that has something to do with it. Once I replaced the stock feet, things opened up nicely. Replacing the headshell and rewiring the tonearm took things even further. At this point, nothing I've heard in a similar price range from Rega, Music Hall, etc. has made me wish I had bought something else. Quite the opposite really. I'd like to hear your Technics side-by-side with mine to see what the differences are.
