Computer based audio - We're making the move!
« on: 10 Oct 2008, 04:19 pm »
We have what I consider to be some exceptional digital front end gear here right now with the Audio Note transports and Audio Note Custom modified DACs leading the way. Seeing how times are changing, I decided to add a USB input to our DAC and pick up a new laptop computer for the task.

Now I just have to figure things out

This may very well bring about a new modification product for us as well in 2009 :green: We'll keep you posted on that one

GAWD, USB is such a PITA to get half-way decent, but to get you off on the right track, when you pick out your USB receiver:

Don't use BB 2906 (no I2S output)

BB 2706/2707 are decent and can do direct USB->I2S.

TI 1020 3200 can do I2S but needs programming.

and do not use the computer's USB BUS for powering anything.  Tie off the power lead from USB cable and use a good PS (simple battery works great).

Just my 2 cents.

P.S.  Decent-sounding USB driver is whole another ball of wax. First of all, Generic USB audio driver from Microsoft is pure cr**P.  ASIO4ALL and USB-ASIO driver (not free) have their own issues.  To bypass all that, you may want to consider going with Mac like Gordon Rankin, but then you're pretty much stuck with iTunes and very limited number of software  :duh:

Sure you wanna do this?  :green:
