GAS Fall Audio Party
« on: 7 Oct 2008, 04:12 pm »
All,

I wanted to get a post started to talk about a fall GAS audio party at my place. Sarah and I are targeting Saturday Nov 8th, so mark your calendars for this one. Anyone who attended the the party at Scott's is welcome to attend this one.

I am planning to get a few different systems together. My main system consists of Dynaudio C2 speakers with Odyssey amps and Bolder Modded Squeezebox. I also have a nice bedroom system with a pair of custom speakers built by Ryan powered by an Arcam amp and Squeezebox running into a Paradisea dac. I am planning to have another system setup in one of our spare rooms. I will post more information as the other systems are finalized. If anyone has any equipment they are willing to bring over PM me and I will start a list.

This will be another meet and greet type party with music available in a few different rooms. My wife Sarah is thinking of doing a turkey and having others bring some side dishes.  I would like to get an idea on the headcount so let me know who all would be up for this one. Also, be sure to invite the ladies as well.

I live in Ballwin, Mo. for those wondering how far they would have to travel.

I'll post more information on the food as we get closer.

Thanks, Rick

Hey Rick.

I'll check the calendar and see what's up after I get back from RMAF.

I think there are a few guys that have a little extra equipment laying around to put together another system  aa

Cool! Looks like we are open as best I can tell. Need to check with the boss first but tentatively count both of us in.

Hey Scott,

I'm glad you can make it out since you have not listened to my system before.  As we get closer I will do a headcount on who will be there and figure out who will be bringing side dishes, etc.

Hey Rick, looks like I'm free that weekend!  I'd love to contribute a few things for a second spare room system if you're interested ... I'll PM you with some ideas.

I'm in. Interested in hearing Ryan's 1000 watt D-sonic amps that I modified on your Dynaudios--might be a nice comparison with the Odyssey amps? I can bring cords, speaker cables, IC's, power supplies--you name it.

Hey Chris and Ryan,

Glad you guys can make it out. I was on vacation last week so I am catching up now on the circle  :D. Chris, I would like to hear the ice power amps on the dynaudios as well. Sarah is starting to prepare the menu so I will let you guys know in a few days what she comes up with. Ryan, if you have a pair of speakers to try out in the spare room upstairs that would be great as well.

I know you have an SB3, so I am going to bring to the party for you a DVD+R with about 50 demo cuts of mostly well recorded music on it upsampled to 24 bits at 48KHz in WAV files. You can play it through your computer SqueezeCenter to a SB2, SB3, Duet or Transporter. Some of the music will be new and some is old, so you may be able to compare the sound of these 24/48 files to your existing 16/44 cuts. I know many of the GAS guys have SBs so let me know who else would like a copy of this for their own system reference.

Let me add to the above, that if anyone has a Transporter or USB interface that will pass 24/96, I can make you a music disc of 24/96 WAV files. Just let me know.

Hey Chris, thanks to you my music server RAID array is completely full now.  I was doing fine, until I started upsampling everything to 24/96, and then space ran out quick!

... and I was one of the ones that didn't think there was an audible difference between .flac and .wav  :duh:

Hey Chris,

I'm excited to hear that demo disk! It will be fun to compare the 24/48 tracks to the 16/44 tracks. I might have to look into that 1T hard drive :) I still don't have all my CDs ripped yet with my current setup.

 Yes, very much so, Please and Thank you!  :thumb:

1TB for $100.... I paid exactly twice that, not very long ago.
I know, I know.......It's the nature of consumer electronics, but it still doesn't mean I have to be happy about it.

Ryan:
Glad to hear that you are now an upsampler--a new and improved Ryan. I know a lot of DACs today upsample as part of their design, but as Ryan has discovered their onboard upsampling may not do as good a job as dedicated upsampling software (which takes many more calculations and more time to complete). I will bring a DVD+R of 24/96 files of the main tunes we used at RMAF with a few additions.

All,

I'm starting to put together a list of those who are planning to attend the fall get together. See the list below. We should have at least three rooms of audio which are also noted. I'm still firming up some of the equipment so things may change somewhat. We can hold more if others would like to come, just respond to this thread and I will happily add you to the list! :) Sarah is working on getting the menu together which will be a fall theme with turkey / ham and various side dishes. I know we will need some help on side dishes and deserts, so if you are going to bring food please let me know.
