Does anyone know how to repair speaker cabinet damage?

I'm not sure which circle to start this topic in, so I'll try here.

I recently won a pair of Tannoy Cheviot speakers on e-bay, and one speaker arrived damaged - the bottom corner was smashed in. I'm dealing with the seller and some form of renumeration separately, but I really like the sound of these speakers, and would like to try to repair the damage rather that return them. The cabinets appear to be a chipboard or masonite type material:

Does anyone know if this is fixable, and how I'd go about repairing them? It doesn't need to be perfect, but I'd like these to be acceptable looking.

Also, the posts that the grills attach to were broken off. I'll do my serious listening with the grills off, but I'd like to cover the speakers when we have company, or if the house is being cleaned. Any idea how to fix this?

There's 2 grills that attach to these. You can see intact posts on the left, and to the right are the broken off posts.

Thanks for any ideas.

Wow, that's unfortunate. I see alot of clamps and wood filler/glue in your future but I can't add much from the pics.

I have some PE speaker grill nubs, two sizes, that I could send you for the broken mounts. I've had that issue with vintage Polk speakers and usually drill them out, pry out the old stuff....be careful of the veneer and insert new ones.

I'm sorry I can't help much but I'm sure you're not the only one that opened a box to find that.

It won't be all that different than repairing a broken guitar neck. although it should be somewhat easier.

Here's an example:

A few other similar repairs elsewhere on the same site.

Good luck.

I've soaked the side-wall area with wood glue and clamped tightly; will remove clamps tonight to see how things look. Then glue and clamp the bottom portion, fill-in with wood putty, and I think we'll be OK there.

Mark,

I've been on the PE site and I can't find the speaker grill nubs listed there, nor could I find a source for them on the net. If you're willing to send me 4 of them, I'll gladly pay for them and shipping costs. I'll send you a PM.

Mike - Replied to your PM and will have the parts shipped very soon. Don't sweat the cost, that's just silly.

Contact a local cabinet maker and see what he can do.  He can probably refinish the speaker and veneer the section to match.  There was an amazing fix on a set Aerial 7B's I saw on AVS that looked almost as bad.  They turned out just about good as new.

As recommended above, saturate the splits with wood glue or epoxy and clamp back to shape.  I'd clamp a piece of plywood along the outside edges as a brace so you don't deform the edge any more than it already is.  This way, you're more likely to get a straight edge.  Luckily, that missing corner chunk is on the bottom of the speaker.  Fill with wood putty that matches the overall color of the speaker and rock on!  If you're a little bit insane, you could cleanly saw off the corner and glue on a new piece of wood than veneer the piece (or the whole side if you're REALLY insane).  You could also buy a wood-stain marker of the same color.  But really, who's that insane?
