Audio is an extraordinary community
« on: 3 Sep 2008, 11:05 pm »
Last week I was contacted by an audiophile in Canada interested in the V60.  He's a current Infinity owner (RSIIb) and wanted a compare-and-contrast opinion about the two systems.  So I referred him to V60 owner Dave H who owned Infinity RS1b's for many years.  I asked Dave to answer the man's questions and give him an objective evaluation of the two speakers.

I heard back from Dave, who was glad to do so.  Indeed he emailed my Canadian contact and gave a brief reply, with more info to follow.

Rather routine, you say?  Not quite.  Dave's house, located an hour outside of New Orleans, sits in the direct path of murderous Hurricane Gustav, and he had to interrupt boarding up windows and wrapping  audio gear in plastic, expecting massive flooding!

Today I heard from Dave again: he has telephone but no AC power, and may be without it for weeks.  No substantial damage to his home (he stayed put during the storm).
And yes, he'll be happy to contact our Canadian friend again as soon as possible.

The postal service ("Neither rain, sleet nor snow...")has nothing on decidated audiophiles willing to help out fellow music lovers.

In my book, Dave is a hero.

Hey, I used to have a pair of Infinity Reference Standard IIs as my main speakers.  I bought them in 1983, and kept them until I replaced them with the Thiel CS-3.5 (in 1990).  They were pretty cool speakers, and to the best of my memory and knowledge, fairly similar in concept to the V60.

But the Thiels were a big jump in performance over the RS-IIs, and the RM40s were an equally big jump in performance over the Thiels.  So, if your potential Canadian customer ends up buying the V60s, he's gonna be one happy camper.

Oh, and all of us that hail from the Bayou State are usually willing to go above and beyond to help someone out.

Well, Big B.  There's another way of looking at it - if you would have referred your new Canadian friend to me, you would have certainly lost any hope of a sale.  See, it's not the whole audio community that's extraordinary.  Just parts of it.

Hope this helps!

Yes, we usually refer prospective VMPS'ers to people who actually like
their speakers.

Oh, I like my speakers. It's people I don't like!

You've been spending too much time at audioannex.com.

No insanity plea necessary to post on AC!

Zheeeem has a very dry sense of humor. He let me listen to his 30's and he was thoroughly friendly and gracious. The result was that I bought a pair too.  Thanks Zheeeem!  I hope I didn't spoil your day by blowing your cover!

It was an off day.  Plus I was hoping you had food in your car.

The result was that I bought a pair too.

I think you'd probably already made up your mind.

What is the audio annex?

Not a good place for anyone who takes being an audiophile seriously.  Most posts there have nothing at all to do with audio, and those that do are generally poking holes in the various windbags and liars that abound on most other websites.  It is completely unmoderated and you can never get banned.  About half the members have been banned from Audio Asylum, and about 3/4th of the members are sockpuppets.  That said, it's probably the only board on the web where I would actually value the views of the members, and it's pretty common for folks to give one another gear.  And at one point, one of the members (Allan) actually ran an electron micrograph of one of Geoff Kait's "intellichips" to demonstrate that it was nothing but a die stamped metal disk glued into a cheap plastic case.

The best part of the Annex, however, was that for a few weeks there was a board called "Ask Zheeeem about his new speakers".  It lasted for about 3 weeks from after I got my VMPS RM30s right up to the point where everyone got bored.  "What kind of website does that for its members?" you might ask.  The answer is - "One with about 5 regular members."
