Wow! That's quite a thorough review Nuance. I checked out your journey on AVSForum. Very nice & constructive feedback on the various speakers that you auditioned. I'm glad you're happy w/ the new speaks. Myself being a big fan of ribbon/planar drivers, I'm sure they sound great. I friend of mine bought a set (non-ribbon) of SongTower's last year and is thrilled with them.I also see that you are a fellow Milwaukee-area audiophile... Go Brewers!
Brandon,A very nice review.I think you have told me/us somewhere what electronics and source is upstream of the SongTowers but would you please restate it again.Thank you,Lou
Thanks Brandon for listing your albums & cuts. It helped me flesh out my library. I like your name also, I was raised in Brandon, VT. Cheers, Robin
Thank you much!So where in WI are you located? Go Brewers - yes, they need to get going. They dropped 3 in a row to the Mets. They always do this sort of thing when it matters. Oh well, we should still make it into the post-season. I still love my team!
Brookfield... You?In reference you your latest post, are you connecting you PC directly to you preamp, or do you have a DAC (or Squeezebox) in there? Are your plans for a nice Audio / HT system or more along the lines of multi-channel audio?
Nuance - Am in the process of ordering ST RTs....am running an Emotiva amp using a HK 7200 as a pre/pro...but will be upgrading the pre/pro to the Emotiva UMC-1. Are you saying that the ribbon tweeters are just too bright using the Emotiva amp? I've found the amp to be almost completely colorless and extremely accurate to the source material. If the material is warm the sound is warm, if the material is brittle that gets relayed also. Agree, though, that the amp doesn't instill any warmth on its own.How much of an issue do you think this is? Is it bad enough in your opinion that perhaps I should not upgrade the tweeter? I'm not going to change my amp any time soon.
Thanks...I wonder if the new UMC-1 will have the same characteristics? While the HK has its tweaks it does have a warm tone. Can't continue to use it though because it has a volume balance problem and none of the newer processing for soundtracks. I guess I could start the pre/pro search again but the UMC-1 is such a quality component for the $ I would find it hard to pass up.
Nuance, my power amp is a Quad 909 and I absolutely love it. I had a couple of Meridian 557s before, which were quite powerful and sounded good, but the Quad is so much better. It has ample power, 140 wpc into 8 ohms and 250 wpc into 4 ohms, works really well on both ends of the audio spectrum and has a lovely and warmish midrange without it sounding like it intentionally rounds everything off. I suspect it would work quite well with the STs. You can buy a brand new Quad 909 from Underwood Wally on Audiogon for $1190 (list is $1500) and it comes with a 3-year warranty in the USA. My preamp is a Linn Wakonda, which is a good mate IMO to the 909, but you can also get a matching Quad 99 preamp from Wally at a good price, and he does offer the two at a special package price. This system is a 2-channel system right now, but will be used for mostly multi-channel music down the road. If it outperforms the Rocket HT, then I'll use it for movies as well.
The next thing I purchase is a musical subwoofer, the rest of the 5.1 package and a front end worthy of the SongTower's.

Sounds like you are leaning toward the Ribbon STs for your HT even though you did note the "off-axis response suffered a little in comparison to the Hiquphon dome tweeter". If I'm correct can you add any more comments on your decision to go with the Ribbon STs for HT?ThanksRon
