Ray Kimber to Record VMPS live music demo at CES!
« on: 16 Jul 2008, 05:51 pm »
The calvary have arrived, in the form of Ray Kimber's kind offer to take over the recording/playback chores at our CES live-vs-recorded demo using his matchless DSD multichannel recorder and microphones.

Live, unamplified music is rare enough in public venues, but I doubt anyone here has heard a multichannel DSD (Super Audio) master played back direct from the digital storage media, within minutes of recording the event.  It should be a stellar occasion.

Further details will appear in the regular "Ampzilla, VMPS and Live Music at CES" thread.

This is going to be an exciting demo.  I don't this ever happening at any CES I've been to read about.

Brian, I just hope you don't string the system together with a bunch of expensive Kimber cable.  Don't get me wrong: I like Kimber cable, and use some.  But it would sure be nice if you could show the world what can be achieved with merely mid level speaker cable, mid level interconnects and modestly priced power cords, rather than a bunch of wire that costs more than the rest of the system, or more than any of its other significant parts.

No, this won't be a tweaky system, since we won't have to compensate for deficiencies in the source--no CD's, CD player, LP's, turntables, phono cartridge, or tape.

The V60's will operate off the DCX2496 digital crossover and EQ. and I expect we will be adjusting the speakers to match the live music as closely as possible.  Other than that, there will be no manipulation of any kind--Ray tells me he doesn't even own a mixing board!  So, no compression, tone controls, reverb, mixing, or other added production values. Just pure, loss-free music.

Will you be listing the specifics of the recording chain anywhere?

There will be at least four performances per day, each 30 to 45 minutes, featuring a variety of performers.  Free tickets for each session will be available in advance, with AC'ers getting preferential treatment.  The Saturday nite after hours party featuring all our artists will be recorded and made available as a hybrid SACD.

I will give full details of the recording and reproduction chain, room treatment, locations of the performers and microphones, and other technical details here on our Forum in the coming months.

Will this now be a multichannel demo, or remain two channel?

I have yet to work out the details with Ray, but I suspect we will record and playback at least four channels, since this gives added flexibility.  The extra channels may be "main" or "surround", we shall see.
