That Nikon super zoom is definitely a very convenient lens.  I use a Canon 70-200 4.0L http://www.amazon.com/Canon-70-200mm-Telephoto-Zoom-Cameras/dp/B000053HH5/ref=pd_sbs_e_5 for outdoors and have no complaints.  I use other lenses for indoor and closeup but this is the one I use to capture outdoor action.

From what little research I've done, I've narrowed my search down to:

Canon Rebel 450 Xsi, or Nikon D60

I want to get an 18-200mm lens and put it on and keep it on.

From what I've read, the Canon might be a little better camera, but the Nikon lens is better than the Tamron or Sigma.

I'm thinking of going the Nikon route because of this.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

My Canon XSi came with 18-55mm lens. Adding Ultrasonic 28-135mm ($350 new. On sell.)  ended my lens search for now. For $1100 - more or less, with two lenses it came a little over my original budget but I love the image quality and size. Whoever recommended Puffer as the nice tweak - thanks.
Best $19.99 spend. Really helpfull indoors but not only.

I originally though about getting G12 (nice compact point&shoot - very good image) , however I am glad I did not.

Thanks to all that helped.

Hm, well, that's a big increase in the budget! ;)

Personally I would stick with the kit lenses and put the money towards a macro lens (I can personally vouch for the AF-S 60mm Micro-Nikkor, but the 105mm Micro-Nikkor and the Sigma 150mm HSM both have good reputations as well).

Ah, so many choices

Not to contradict what I said before... but for a fixed-lens long-zoom solution a bridge camera like the Fuji s100fs might be worth a look. There's a review on dpreview.com.

I guess it really depends on what your goals are.

Enh, well I played with the Fuji in a store today and didn't like it at all.

I was actually thinking of something for my sister - top candidate right now is the E-410 w/ kit lens, local shop is closing them out at AUD600.
