Fully loaded Isabella + Sig 30.2 power amp = Bliss!
« on: 15 Jul 2008, 03:10 am »
I am new to AC but have been a long time lurker.  One of the forums that I have been keeping up with is the Red Wine Audio forum.  This is mostly because I own AKG K1000 headphones and really was interested in how good they would be with the Signature 30.2.  I feel in love with this combo.  Recently (the past year or so) I have been getting into home audio and now have a great completed set up.   I am reporting to you as one proud owner of the Isabella with Isabellina DAC and headphone output, combined with a Signature 30.2 power amp.  I first had a Sig 30.2 with integrated volume control but after some thought and recommendations from vinnie, I changed it to a power amp version when I decided to go for the Isabella.

I really want to express how much I have been enjoying the RWA combo so I thought a little mini review would be a perfect way to do it.  I am new posting such a “review,” so just bare with me.

Gear:   Red Wine Audio Signature 30.2
Red Wine Audio Isabella with built in Isabellina and headphone output stage
Rega P3-24 turntable, Rega Exact MM cartridge, Rega Fono Stage,
Upgraded Rega PSU, and upgraded platter/ subplatter from Groove Tracer
   Magnepan MMGs
   AKG K1000 headphones
MacBook Pro as the digital source using lossless files

Some test music:

Iron & Wine – “Lovesong of The Buzzard”
Why? -  "The Vowels, Pt. 2"
Feist – “So Sorry”  and “I Feel It All”
The Decemberists – “The Crane Wife 3”
Thom Yorke – “ Skip Divided”
     Air -  “Universal Traveler”
Modest Mouse – “Fire it Up”
Cat power – “Colors And The Kids”
Fleet Foxes -  “White Winter Hymnal”

As you can see from my music taste I am mostly an Indie Rock fan.  Most of the music I picked was not because of sound quality, though most of that music is fairly well recorded,  it was because I have all of those songs on both LP and digital. Digital, so this gives Vinnie’s bold claim of an “analog sounding” DAC a little challenge.  I think with all of my vinyl rig put together it comes pretty close to the cost of the up coming stand alone DAC, the Isabellina.

Right out of the box the Isabella with the Signature 30.2 power amp sounds much improved over my 30.2 integrated.
Now I must state there isn’t that much time on both of these units,  less than 100 hours.

Here are some pictures of my modest set up (looking for new speakers to really show off what the RWA gear can do):

First off, the Isabellina dac in the Isabella is amazing!  I have heard a few different dacs, though all fairly low end, I can say that I really enjoy this dac on a whole new level.  I would describe the Isabellina dac as having a very natural, very lifelike sound.  It conveys all the energy and life of the music, without sounding artificial in any way.   The sound is very rich in tone (like my analog rig) and dimensional.

My love for the Isabellina dac board might very well have to do with the fact that the Isabella tube preamp section is so good. Everything is so full and fleshed out,  the mid-range especially.  Compared to the 30.2 integrated, the better mid-range of the Isabella + 30.2 power amp is my favorite part along with the increase of dimensionally.  Like Vinnie says, it is very seductive and pulls you more into the music.

Though I am not that great at explaining equipment sound just based off of it’s general sound, I am pretty sure I will do better at comparing the sound of my vinyl rig to the sound of the built-in Isabellina DAC so let me say this now.  I enjoy this Isabella with dac more then my vinyl rig.  I know I do not have a ultra expensive turntable or phono stage, but I have been a really big vinyl fan for a while and the few dacs that I have heard never even came close to sounding on par with my turntable.  The Isabella with dac changes that!

The first thing I notice when I compared my turntable to the dac was actually some extra warmth from the dac.  Crazy but true. I was listening to “So Sorry” by Feist and the great thing about that song is there is not a lot going on other than her vocals and you can really hear the differences.  With the dac, there is more  detail, better placement and third better tone and a more natural feeling to the whole song.

My favorite song is one of the things that can make a decision alone on things in terms of equipment, sad but true.  “The Vowels, Pt. 2” by a band named Why?  I know this song by heart.  I know every little thing that happens in it.  Well, at least I thought I did.  The Isabella itself helped resolve some of the things I never heard but when using the dac in the equation, more and more little tiny details about this song are clearer and found. Another thing about his song is that it can sound very bland with out the right set up.  My turntable gives it what it needs, but the dac gives it even more.

I could go through all of my songs a keep explaining more and more of what I hear, but the conclusion is the same.  The Isabellina dac board does in fact have a very analog sound, and without a doubt will compete with an analog rig around the same price.  So this means you can have a digital player with a natural,  analog sound and have even more of everything else such as detail, imaging and the convenience digital with a laptop or any other digital transport.

I almost forgot to mention another great thing.  I have the headphone output option too.  Though after I got into home audio my headphone listening has gone down A LOT, I still really wanted to know what this sounded like.  The headphone output is another blessing in itself.  Honestly, I hate praising things too much, but I have listened to more headphone gear than home audio gear and I enjoy this headphone output more than any other headphone amp I’ve heard.  I have a few different headphones including Senn. HD650s, Grado SR 225s, and AKG K701s.  I have never heard them all sound so good, especially when using the dac as my input.  My favorite pair with the headphone option are the grado SR225s.  Even though grados aren’t my favorite thing, they really shine with this headphone output!  If anyone out there still thinks Grados don’t have a good soundstage, you should hear those babies reach with the Isabella.  I could write a full review on just the headphone option, but this “mini review” is getting long.

Well I almost want to go into tube rolling, but I will wait for more people to start to post and wait for a new thread in time.  I think my favorite out of the few that I have are the Telsa PCC88, but the stock 6922s that come with the Isabella sound so fine as is.

I hope to hear what a lot of other people think about the Isabella and I really can’t wait to hear what the upcoming 6moons has to say about it too.   I hope you enjoyed my write up.

Hi Whyyyyyy (nice name BTW and that is a great band!),

Welcome to Audiocircle and the RWA forum!  Sounds like you have been very busy listening!

Thank you very much for signing up and posting your initial impressions and taking some pictures. :notworthy:

I really appreciate how you made the time to listen to your analog rig and compare it to the Isabella's
dac using the same albums that you own in both formats, and I am very please to hear that the Isabellina
dac does not "leave you wanting more."

Thank you for also sharing your initial impressions of how the Isabella + 30.2 compares to the 30.2 integrated
you were using.  Your findings about the more fleshed-out midrange and added dimensionality are some of
the key sonic attributes of the Isabella that we worked so very hard at getting right, and the Isabellina dac is
another story to be told and you already seem to have taken the plunge into that  :thumb:

I'm also glad that you are enjoying your headphones (wow, you are quite the headphone junkie!) with the Isabella.
It was only natural for us to use the SLA battery powered tubed linestage of the Isabella and optional dac to also bring
the headphone lover with something very special, and the headphone output (which buffers the tube output so it can drive the relatively low impedance of headphones) module makes it all happen, off-the-grid and all in one enclosure!

Thanks again for posting your impressions

More Isabellas with Isabellina dac option are shipping out THIS WEEK to those who already placed their orders.  Everything is running right on schedule and saying that we are keeping busy is an understatement! :hyper:

whyyyyyy. Really nice first impressions, and pictures.
I am going in the somewhat same direction. Have an incoming Signature 30.2 (integrated), and will most certainly order a Isabellina (standalone DAC) when it comes available (an August target have been mentioned). Will pair this up with a MacBook Pro as source and AKG K1000 as transducer. Perhaps even a Stax SRD-7 Pro and one of my Stax (SR-007BL, 4070 and SR-404).

Would be great if you could write some lines about how the system match up with your K1000.   aa

whyyyyyy,  Thanks for your impressions.  I'm also very interested in the headphone capability of the Isabella.  You've listed the headphones you've used.  Could you also tell us what amps you've used in the past?  This would be very useful is establishing a point of reference.

Thanks a lot!

krmathis,  k1000 are even more of an enjoyment with the Isabella.  Just like the speakers, that same improvements are made.  I am not sure what you are using as a source right now, but I do believe that you are going to really enjoy the DAC even without the preamp stage.  I am not sure how the DAC will sound alone exactly, but if it holds up to how it sounds with the preamp, you will be very happy.

Portos,  I have owned a few portables and the only desktop amp that I have owned was the Little Dot MkIII, which is a very nice tube amp for the price.  But I have been to few different head-fi meets over the years and have listening to alot of really good amps and have spent alot of time with some of the top of the line amps from woo audio, ray samuels, single power, headroom, and headamp.  I really think this headphone amp stacks up very well next to headphone amp manufacturers that are listed.  I wont say that is better then all of these, because alot of that is based on taste in sound, but I can say that with my tastes, I do enjoy this headphone option more then most of those manufacturers amp's.

Sounds great! That the K1000 are even more of an enjoyment with the Isabella...
I sure hope some of the sound comes from the Isabellina, as thats the one I will get.

Currently use the following system: MacBook Pro -> Electrocompaniet ECD1 -> Doxa 70 Signature MKII -> AKG K1000
The Doxa have been sold (leaving on Friday) and I am planning to replace the Electrocompaniet with an RWA Isabellina. As it will probably match up nicely with the Signature 30.2. Both aesthetically and sound wise...
Can't wait!  aa

Hi krmathis,

Your are CORRECT!   8)

You will love the Isabellina dac with your Signature 30.2... they are the perfect match for each other - sonically and aesthetically.

We are waiting for the Isabellina enclosures.  They should be ready by the end of this month, and then we'll take pictures and finish the Isabellina webpage and have it ready for purchase.

Did you receive your 30.2?  Are you only using it with your K1000s, or also with home audio speakers?

Cheers!

Vinnie

Not received the 30.2 yet. Its been sitting in customs since monday afternoon...
But they will hopefully release it quite soon, so I can get my hands on it. :)

It will be used manly for the K1000. But will certainly give it a go on speakers as well.

Taken from this thread,
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=58040.msg513790#msg513790,
here is some initial feedback from Audiocircle member 6rs:

Quote from: 6rs
I have not much knowledge of different gear that is on today's market. I was not happy with my previous gear. There was too much glare, listening was quite fatiguing. However, I do remember how much fun a good stereo can be as I used to own one. I sold the Quad ESL63 (too big) and the magic was gone too. The replacement, an ATC SCM20 did not fit in well.
The Sig 30.2 fixed the major problem, the glare, right away, together with an Ack Dack 2.0. I was excited again and started to upgrade tweeter, mid/bass driver and Xover compontens of my SCM20. In addition I bought mapleshade's speaker wire and bedrock stands. That was another HUGE improvement. At this point, my wife, who never used the equipment before, started to listen to her music.
With the Isabella, the most important change was that the music was becoming slower, less busy, and more transparent. Before, I often used to avoid unfamiliar, "difficult", or complex passages in the music and skip or fast-forward to my favorite spots. With the Isabella, listening to this music is not work anymore: it is more like lying in the grass and enjoying the different shapes of the clouds that are passing by. Quite often I stay up till late at night and enjoy listening to CDs that I "knew" were good but never really enjoyed before.
And it is not even broken in yet. I ordered some different tubes out of curiosity (Tesla gold pins, Tungsram and Panasonic, nothing over-the-top pricewise). The JJ tubes are described as on the warm and sweet side in other forums. So I am curious if the sound could have a little more rawness, without losing any of its magic.
B

6rs, thank you very much for posting your initial impressions of your Isabella!

By all means, have fun tube rolling (I admit that I have been doing the same and am having fun with it!)  8)

Happy listening, always!

Vinnie
