Yep, no watered down tourist music, just great reggae music. Sadly I only have about 90% of the stuff on there.

MFSL edition of Exodus is really good. Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers are almost all great recordings of which Joy and Blues is my favorite. Steel Pulse's Smash Hits is good. Steppin' Out is a great test track. For sheer groove,TOOTS and the Maytals Reggea Greats is a fav. Keep em coming.  :green:

Steel Pulse "African Holocaust" is good.  The song "Dem a Wolf" is a killer tune.

Steel Pulse "earth Crisis" is good.  The song "Dem a Wolf" is a killer tune.

Big DITTO on that  :thumb: (the music is great - the recording is more than a bit screechy..as an early 'digital' recording)

They're fantastic in concert, too.

10' Ganja Plant's Hillside Airstrip is also very good. Alpha Blondy's Jah Glory is another to check out. Midnite's Ras Mek Peace is very good.

Now you'r bring back some serious memories.  Midnite use to call DC home for several years.  They played twice a week at Bukom Cafe and once a week at the Kaffa House.  When the music got realy serious and the Rasta spirit started to take over I would run up to the band stand and bang out a mighty Jah rhythm on the congas Vaugh (the singer of the 2 brothers that are the core of the band) would have on stage.  As a matter of fact I have just picked up 2 more of their disc.

Jah bless
Ric

Good stuff.

great music topic.  For me personally one guy had me searching stores high and low for another like him:
http://www.amazon.com/Time-Tough-Anthology-Toots-Maytals/dp/B000001E9D/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1216096475&sr=8-6
Frederick "Toots" Hibbert of Toots and the Maytals
Toots had the 60's Motown vocal soul  in his voice and his songs were incredibly infectious reggae pop tunes.

reydenfan- great suggestion- I love this album too!

This is one of those once inalifetime meeting of musical minds in the reggae world....arrangements by Augustus Pablo, with King TUbby at the mixer board and a very young "Killer" Miller providing the vocals. Miller became famous a couple years later with the band 'Inner Circle'.
I never quite knew why Jacob Miller got the nickname "killer"... died young, 1980.
This was one of the earliest appearance ('74/75) of dub reggae on the scene...dub: instrumental version of a tune whereby the vocals are stripped and sound effects added, echo, delay, additional bass lines. Usually appears as the B side of the single.

*Edit...ok, just read a short bio of J.M. "Killer Miller" was the title of one of his tunes...guess it stuck with him after...

Anybody checked out Groundation.

http://www.groundation.com/music.html

"We Free Again" is a MUST have.  I guarantee you will not be disappointed.  I only wish this stuff was on vinyl.

I just did. I really enjoyed the mp3 sample of We Free Again. There is a lot of variety from one tune to the next.

May have to buy it!

Thanks for the tip, ricmon :thumb:

I am thrilled to see this thread taking off  :icon_lol: Keep the recommendations coming! Here is another one from me. Bill Laswell allowed in the Marley archives to create ambient dubs translations, killer stuff!!

Judy mowatt's classic, "black woman" is in a class of its own. Think aretha meets Jamaica.  I dont know anyone who did not like it, no matter what their taste or age...;

A good deal of Marley is recorded well. MFSL released (at least) Catch a Fire and Exodus. Live (at the Lyceum) sounds great.

I don't find the son nearly as talented as his father, but I have always like this Ziggy Marley album ever since I bought it new 20 years ago.  Sure it's pop reggae, but it's just a very well put together and recorded album, imho.

Nice, huge Augustus Pablo fan myself, here are two of my favorites:

Caught their fist American concert at the 9:30 club in DC.  I forget the year (just turn 50 last month.  some memories are getting harder to recall).
