Help With Berhinger DCX2496 Setup
« on: 7 Jul 2008, 06:49 pm »
I have the Emerald Physics CS2's and I am running two separate Panasonic XR-700 receivers in all digital mode.  I currently have it set up as suggested by the factory with the highs on one channel (amp) and the lows on the other.  It has been suggested by a friend that it would sound better to have the left on one and the right on the other.  So, if I wanted to do this, how do I change the DCX setup so it works in this configuration?

Thanks,

James

I have mind vertically biamped.  I believe this is standard use for these speakers.  That means each speaker has its own amp which powers both the highs and lows.

There is no reason to alter the settings of the Behringer.  It's only a matter of swapping cables in the right inputs and outputs.

Well I have just installed the 3x SPDIF output from switch-box.com.  I forgot too mention this part.  The thing is that now I only have two cable exiting the behringer.  In other words, there are 3 output jacks and I am only using 2 of them.  Each is plugged into the CD Digital In jack on each of the Panasonic XR-700's.  I can see the berhringer registering that a signal is being processed: the output level lights are dancing up and down with the input music but I get zero sound through the speakers.  I am at a loss to understand what the issue could be.

I do notice that when I mute the Panasonic a slight hum develops.  Not sure why this would only occur with the receivers muted?

Thanks,

James

Do you think you could put together a diagram or take a picture of the signal path from source all the way to your speakers?  A quick check, did you make sure to adjust the Behringer input to read AES/BSU?

Just move the speaker wires on the Pannys.  You shouldn't notice a difference, all four amp channels are identical.

Panny mute shuts off signal stage, but doesn't silence the amps which are still amplifying at full gain to speakers. The hum is getting into the amp somehow, probably through ground from signal. If your digital in is your only connection, try optical instead of coax if possible, or use a transformer decoupler to break a ground loop.

You might find that the Behringer DAC is better than the Panny. You could also try the Jan Didden mod kit if you want to improve the sound of behringer. It is pretty rough as stock.

Are you getting a digital signal out of the Behringer post DSP? How?

Thanks for your help.  Yes, it is set to AES/EBU and the dip switches are in the correct position.  I will try and put up a picture.

The system sounded great even running with analog out and having digital input from a 15 year old Rotel CD player.

I am anxious to hear what the new full digital system will sound like.

It could be that the switch-box is not installed correctly.  I am not sure how to even check this?

I reconfigured the speaker cables after the initial test that produced no sound.  Basically I switched them so the channels are separated left and right now instead of high and low.  It made no change and therefore I still have no sound.

Thanks,

James

The stock Behringer does not output digital signals, only analog. It can be modified to do this, there is a kit available but I can't remember who makes it. You might want to PM sunshinedawg and ask him who makes this. I helped him install the kit in his DCX and he us using two Panny receivers in full digital mode with his CS2's.

Edit: did a little digging and found the person selling the 3x S/PDIF board: http://www.switch-box.com/3x_S_PDIF_Digital_Output_Board.html

Please note that this is not without risks. Serious harm can come to your DCX as this requires soldering to the very small traces in the DCX.

Mike,

This is the unit that I had installed.  I was with the gentleman when he did the installation and it looked like he/we did everything correctly.

James,

Some how I missed that you had it installed even after I read it.  Sorry about that, I'm usually a bit faster on the uptake. I think it's time for bed now. ;)

In any event, you might try contacting Sean (sunshinedawg) as I think he's got it well sorted out using this with the Panny receivers. We did test his feeding the digital out into another dac (actually another DCX) and it worked without a hitch. I know his board had some jumper settings and we checked them but I can't remember if any had to be changed.
