LISTENING SESSIONS
« on: 3 Jul 2008, 02:04 am »

You settle down with your favourite drink and listen............

What are your priorities A) artists that you love regardless of the recording quality
                                 B) the recording quality
                                 C) a mixture
                                 D) other

I would say "A" is most important.

Especially after a few adult beverages.   aa

Other.  Whatever fits the mood of the moment.  Sometimes I want to rock out, sometimes I want something that puts me to sleep, sometimes I want to laugh my ass off, sometimes I want to "trip out", sometimes I have no freakin' clue and just play stuff at random.

ALways (A), unless I am evaluating some piece of equipment/accessory then its (B) followed by (C).

A & D. I like to listen to genres based on mood a lot of the time.

"A" unless I'm evaluating but even then if the system won't let me listen to the music I like, regardless of recording quality I will keep messing with it until it does. I'd rather give up the last word in resolution than not be able to listen to great performances with crap recordings.

One thing I know for sure is that if I don't like the music or it doesn't have musical qualites like rhythm. Then it doesn't matter how good the audio is, I don't enjoy listening to it and can't be bothered listening to it.

Going through hundreds of my cds. I separated out these albums, and probably will never spin them again.

With the good music separated from the bad. I find most of the time I don't know what to play anymore as I have become tired of playing music I've heard many times. I need new good music! Fortunately my friend is sending me some electronic music which should keep me busy for awhile.

As for your question:

What are your priorities?
A) artists that you love regardless of the recording quality
 B) the recording quality
 C) a mixture
 D) other

I would say B) I want to have the 'I am there' concert experience. However with my BCD-1, pretty much everything fits that criteria. So my priority then is 'live' concert recordings.

Last night I found myself listening to Cassandra Wilson, then switched to Faith No More, then to Vivaldi, and finally to the electronic version of the James Bond theme on Shaken Not Stirred by David Arnold (gets my booty movin)...guess there is no rhyme or reason.   aa

First I need to decide what type of music I wish to listen to, then it is A, then B for me. I don't care how good the recording is, if I don't like the artist, then I won't enjoy listening. However if I have two artists which I would like to listen to, then I decide by the recording quality.

With music on my computer, I delete anything I don't like.  This approach would allow you to enjoy some of the music that you've abandoned by default. Just a thought.

Hello all:

For me, it is almost always "A".

My initial pick of music is usually for the mood I'm (or more accurately, want to be) in.

Unfortunately, my system is revealing enough that music I want to listen to, often is recorded so poorly that I can't stand it for very long.

If your truely hooked on music nothing is needed to qualify the session. Take my father as a rather extreme example, having over 10,000 recordings he listens in Alphabetical order going down the list and never straying from it when solo, it took him over 10 yrs to get through entire collection last time. When I say there is no need to qualify for some, I see some say get a drink, get something I am in the mood for, get something that sounds good.....but for my dad its just the part of every day he listens to music, like eating.
I usually just wing it or get inspired by maybe a song I heard and want to listen to entire album but there is no real pattern to my listening and I could never listen like my dad, I mean he is on Bach for weeks! His collection is mainly Classical and as he studied Pipe Organ, Flute and Conducting he is on a different level altogether.

With me its choice A

I usually load my mp3 player with full albums for work Sunday and then replace the ones I've listened to during the week. usually a mixture of stuff i haven't heard for a while and what ever new stuff i picked up during the week. which brings me to what i usually pick for a listening session is something off the mp3 player that sounded good so i will pull the cd's from the rack and go for it. Some times its a song on the radio thatI haven't heard that in a while that will be put on the list. I always have a stack of cd's that i'm working through..

I did not expect more input to this thread. Anyway, w/o trying to stir up any controversy I sincerely applaud the very happy Ipod generation or more succintly the 99.9% non-audiophile listening public. I include the marvelous musicians in this group whom I've met and had the privilege to play with and have a total disregard for such concerns such as soundstaging, imaging, and my favorite.... leading transients blah, blah. Because I heard a difference it consumed me for decades. Of course I still hear subtle to dramatic differences in any change in my system but my addictive personality has managed to get rid of at least one of the excesses ..... audiophiledom. My priority has always been listening to the artists I love.

Actually I envy those who don't hear a difference or simply don't care.

I would have to say A.  It will depend on what my mood is for the music style I want to hear at the time.

I hear a difference Frank it's just inconvenient to drag my whole system to work with me  besides there is a 105 db noise floor in the place not a good listening room at all. You know the audio thing is suggestive at best at the rave in may i was listening to a set of monitors that i wanted to hear and the guy on my right said they were the worst thing he ever heard and what a lousy design they were and the guy on my left said they were fantastic except a little bass shy. Me i just got back from the cd store where i picked up 2 used Miles Davis cd a Art Bakley and the Jazz Messengers and a Sonny rollins / John Coltrane cd so i'm settle in for a session right now

I am most definitely an A and D person, whatever suits my fancy!

I find most of the time I don't know what to play anymore as I have become tired of playing music I've heard many times. I need new good music!

Ah!  We have a great resource for that right here at AC called the "What are you listening to now" thread.  Lots of great new suggestions there!  Just click on the "notify" button and you're set  :thumb:
